Rick was the rock in my new life in Charleston many years ago. He married me, christened my only child and traveled to give the homily at my mother“s funeral. I can even say I once fished with him which made me only fonder of the man. Nothing but pure joy when he and Annie found each other. Much love to her and the family at this very sad time.

Rick will be missed by many people as he was a people person. I always felt comfortable in his presence. He was a great community leader that was well respected by all. I know I will miss seeing him. May his family and friends find peace at this difficult time.

I will never forget Rick and Annie's visit to our little home in Honduras so long ago. They sat at our kitchen table with little Mary Elizabeth, who was my foster daughter then and only about four years old, and talked back and forth with her on "banana phones," laughing and laughing because Mary didn't know much English, and they didn't know much Spanish, and anyway . . . banana phones??? Makes me smile to remember that! So humble, so dear, so affectionate and encouraging -- just what a lonely missionary needs for company! May the LORD bless Rick's family and bring deep consolation. He was truly "God's pencil," as Mother Teresa would say. He wrote the Love of Jesus on many, many hearts!

Though he was in charge at church and in his various leadership roles, he was always "Rick". Though he was an introvert he was always warm and available; much more interested in others- their thoughts and needs- than he was interested in talking about himself. He was used greatly, (what an understatement), to bring many to a saving knowledge and life giving relationship with Jesus Christ.
Rick was one of the best preachers and teachers I have ever heard anywhere.
He took Biblical doctrine and wrapped it in stories that drew the listener's attention and made us want to lean in to know how it was going to turn out. When the story had him lost while canoeing through a flooded swamp, it was a small dry leaf he floated in the water which, like God's still small voice, showed where the nearly invisible current flowed, and led him out to the marked channel.
For many, Rick has been like that leaf, steady and sure, gently and humbly serving as the reflected light of Christ guiding us toward the safety of Christian Faith, the only safety there is. His light will continue to shine through generations to come.

Rick Belser married me and my husband in 1980. I loved him like he was my Papa and he loved me too. We all say he is happier now in heaven than the struggle he had this last week. But we are selfish and just want him here with us always. We will meet again on the other side. Till then ....You are missed Rick but my life was FOREVER changed as a lost 12 yo little girl. Your family was my family.
