Elder Wilder was born in Charleston, SC, on November 28, 1912, to Mr. Lawrence Gailliard and Mrs. Margaret Singleton Gailliard of Sol Legare, James Island, SC. She spend her early life on Sol Legare and attended the Sol Legare community schools. She was raised on the farm of her mother and father in Sol Legare. During this time the country was in a depression and she was unable to finish high school and had to work on the farm. She always wanted to be a school teacher and never gave up her ambition to continue her education. She received her high school diploma from the W. Gresham Meggett Adult Education Program under the tutelage of her son Harrison Wilder, Jr. She always pushed her children to obtain a higher education. Elder Wilder was very active in community civic affairs. She always pushed for individuals to register to vote and was always one of the first persons at the voting poll. She helped found the James Island Improvement Organization. This organization was founded to help citizens improve on conditions on James Island and help shellfish fishermen continue to harvest shellfish. She was very active in the founding of the first town of James Island. When we lost the first town, she demonstrated with other James Island residents in front of Charleston City Hall, in protest to the City of Charleston for not allowing the town charter to stand. Elder Wilder was married to the late Harrison Wilder, Sr., on June 30, 1928. To this union 11 children were born. She will always be remembered for her love of her church. She joined the church at the age of 12 under the Pastorate of the late Marion A. Sanders. She was a faithful, dedicated and loyal member of St. James Presbyterian Church for 82 years. She served in numerous capacities such as Presbyterian Women, Senior Choir and was ordained as a Deacon and Elder. She also belonged to a host of other social organizations such as Iluj Sea Shore Farmers Lodge No. 457, Alpha Tent No. 212, and the Daughters of Elijah Order of Eastern Star NO. 337. One lamp - thy mother's love - amid the stars
Shall lift its pure flame changeless, and before
The throne of God, burn through eternity -
Holy - as it was lit and lent thee here.
