RAYMOND PLAYER Obituary

Raymond Wheeler Player CHARLESTON - Entered into eternal rest on the morning of January 2, 2011, Raymond Wheeler Player, husband of Bessie Rials Chassereau-Player. Residence, Charleston, SC. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond W. Player are invited to attend the funeral services of the former in Harbor View Presbyterian Church Wednesday, January 5, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. Interment, 2 p.m. Sardinia-Gable Cemetery, Gable, SC. Friends may call at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL Tuesday between 5 and 7 p.m. and on Wednesday at the church Fellowship Hall following the service. Mr. Player was born June 1, 1922, in Sardinia, SC, a son of the late Edward David Player and the late Sudie Wheeler Player. He was a World War II Army veteran and a Purple Heart recipient. Raymond was a retired Officer for the Internal Revenue Service and a member of Harbor View Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina where he was a valued pitcher for the Gamecock baseball team and a member of the USC Association of Lettermen. He continued to enjoy baseball by avidly following his favorite teams, the Atlanta Braves and of course, the Gamecocks. He derived great pleasure from reading and studying Civil War history and taking trips to visit Civil War sites. Ray is survived by his wife of Charleston; three daughters, Barbara and Capt. (ret) Gary Edwards of Lincolnton, GA, Beverly Robinson of Winston-Salem, NC and Susan Player of Alpharetta, GA; two step-daughters, Lisa C. Finklea (Robbie) of Florence, SC and Paula C. Lister (Scott) of Greenville, SC; a sister, Joyce Player Gibbons of Isle of Palms; and four step-grandchildren, Melissa and Lauren Finklea and Ragon and Kendall Lister. He is predeceased by his first wife of 43 years, Anna Elizabeth O'Quinn Player; a sister, Jean Player Kuna; and a brother, James Edward Player.
