Rachel Grant-Mitchell Obituary

Rachel Grant-Mitchell N. CHARLESTON - Mrs. Rachel Grant-Mitchell, 78, of the "Liberty-Hill Community," North Charleston, South Carolina entered into eternal rest Friday, August 12, 2011. Mrs. Mitchell was the wife of the late Mr. Albert "Mitch" Mitchell, Jr., mother of Mr. Wayne "Ray" Mitchell, Ms. Donna Sutton, Mr. Steffon Mitchell (Sandra); a daughter of the late Rev. Charles Augustus and Albertha Telfair Grant; sister of Mr. Charles "Bobby" Grant (Gwendolyn), Ms. Mary Lou Grant-Murrell (preceded her in death), Ms. Marva Grant-Ivey, Dr. Lucinda Grant-Griffin, Ms. Etta Grant-Ferguson, and Ms. Margaret Grant-Carter; grandmother of Mr. Ranzo Mitchell (Karen), Staff Sgt. Gerrad Mitchell (Victoria), E-4 Specialist (USN) Stefanie Mitchell, Ms. Minnazah Mitchell, and Ms. Brittnay Rachel Mitchell; great-grandmother of six, DuaMuteF Shai Mitchell, HeketTumR Mitchell, UfirImetKa Mitchell, AhumunetNehifiNeferAnkh Mitchell, Dionte Miller and Endya Mitchell; niece of Mrs. Ethel Telfair-Randolph; aunt to a host of nieces and nephews; and adopted mother of Mrs. Lease Bennett, Mrs. Ada Brown-Williams and Mrs. Shaneka Broderick. Mrs. Mitchell was a 1954 graduate of Allen University, Columbia, S.C. where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. She was among the first African Americans to attend and further her studies at The Citadel in 1969. She taught school for many years in the community where she resided. Later, she taught in Charleston County School District 23 and retired in 1988, after teaching in Charleston County School District 20. Mrs. Mitchell was a member of Providence A.M.E. Church where she served on the Pulpit Aid Board and the Trustee Board. Graveside Services for Mrs. Mitchell will be Saturday, August 20, 2011 at 11: 00 am at the Sunset Memorial Gardens, 2915 Ashley Phosphate Road, North Charleston, S.C.
