Philip Planton Obituary

Philip Karl Planton CHARLESTON - Philip Karl Planton, 68, of Charleston, South Carolina, left to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, October 8, 2023. His celebration of life will be held in the Ashley River Baptist Church, Wednesday October 11, 2023, at 11:30 AM. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 10:30 AM. A private graveside service will be held at Live Oak Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr Inc., West Ashley Chapel. Philip was born October 30, 1954, in Pensacola, Florida. After attending schools in Charleston, SC, and New Jersey, he graduated from Hanover Park High School in New Jersey. He graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1976 with a BS in Business Management Science, and he was a passionate Gamecock fan through thick and thin. He enjoyed a 36-year-long career at Santee Cooper as an accounting supervisor. He loved his job and the relationships he built with colleagues. Phil was a man of strong faith who led by example and found joy in service to his family, his church, and his community. He was a devoted husband, caring and proud father, and doting grandfather, who will be remembered for the lengths he would go to lift up and support his family, in matters large and small. An active member of Ashley River Baptist Church since 1977, Phil took on many roles to serve his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ: he was an ordained deacon, served on various committees, taught Sunday School for singles, directed the Church Video Ministry, sang in the senior adult choir, and served as church treasurer. He was also a member of, and served as treasurer for, the Charleston Chapter of the Gideons International. Phil loved sports, and in addition to rooting on his Gamecocks, he played recreational baseball and softball for 48 years, and coached youth basketball and baseball. In retirement, he enjoyed swimming and time in the hot tub. Phil will be remembered for always being ready with a joke and a smile, his selfless service to others, and his dedication to his family and his faith. He is survived by his wife, Kathie Mahaffey Planton; three sons, Jonathan Reid Planton (Leesa), Ryan Patrick Planton (Ashley), Drew Christopher Planton; grandchildren, Ada Grace Planton, Abby Elaine Planton; sister, Pam Schwacke (Buddy) He was preceded in death by father, David Planton; mother, Vonnie Reid; sister, Jan O'Neal; brother, Rick Planton Memorials may be made to Ashley River Baptist Church, Faith FWD Restoration Campaign, 1101 Savannah Hwy., Charleston, SC 29407 or the Gideons International www.gideons.org/donate. Phil, I so enjoyed working with you. You were so kind to me. You explained things clearly so that I would completely understand. I'm sure you will be sorely missed by family and friends. God bless your family in this time of need.

My thoughts and prayers are with you as you go through this time of grief. Remember Phil is with his Lord now. I will never forget working with his crazy self at Santee Cooper. He was always my old buddy and pal!

Phil is my wife Jill Lange's cousin. I first met Phil at our home in Bremerton WA in 1991 and immediately felt a part of his family. Phil knew no stranger. He was gracious and endearing to everyone he met. He will be dearly missed.
