I can't believe how often something happens to make me remember a specific moment that I shared with Philip. It is almost always accompanied with a smile as we shared so many fun moments together, many of which were wrapped in humor.

Hello Andrew: I am a "blast from the past." I stumbled upon your brother's obituary while doing some newspaper research and wanted to take a moment to let you know I'm sorry for your loss. I still have some great memories of good times at North Carolina Press Association conferences. I hope you are doin well. My thoughts are with you and your family.

Laurie and Andrew,

I was friends with your brother at Carolina and the years following. Because of Philip's deep and
profound voice, we called him 'God'.

It was at your mother's home in Greenville, Philip and I took a sketch pad and created the Lil Bird logo. The Lil Bird was a lampoon style campus newspaper, one of the many fun dreams Philip brought to life.

He loved the song "Do They Know It's Christmas?". The year it was released (1984) Philip showed up at my door with a sack full of gifts. He was so proud to hand me that record, and I believe he left on foot to deliver more.

So sorry to have missed the opportunity to pay respects in Spartanburg; I was traveling last
week and am late learning the news.

With deepest sympathies,

Ann&Cecil Powell

So sorry to hear such sad news. I met Philip way back in 1978 while home from the College of Charleston over Christmas break. Tall, dark & handsome with the best moves on the dance floor at Brandy's - he was hard to miss. Even at such a young age, he was the ultimate host... with a boundless generosity of spirit and considerable charm. His contagious joy and quick smile spread to those all around him.

We never lived in the same town, but shared many great visits and adventures during those early college years. I feel blessed that our paths crossed and am hopeful that you all find comfort in many happy memories. My thoughts and prayers go out to all your family at this sad time.

Phyllis, Laurie and Andrew,

Each of you know that I had many wonderful times working with Philip at Community Newspapers.

Many of my most memorable experiences revolved around some sort of humorous set of circumstances. As you know Philip could take a moment and turn it into something hilarious!

One summer morning while working at CNI, he asked me if I could help him move a couple of pieces of furniture during lunch. Even though I had a white shirt and tie on, I gladly accepted.

We loaded the furniture from his then house at Cowpens. On the way back to town he offered to buy me lunch for my assistance. We stopped at his favorite barbeque place and enjoyed lunch laughing and talking. As we got up to leave he acted "totally surprised" that he had forgotten his wallet. I told him it was no problem and I pulled out the money to pay for our lunch at the register. The cashier handed my change back and in a simple "smooth" move Philip's hand slipped in front of mine and took my change that I remember being about $ 10. He said it would give him some walking around money until he found his wallet!

We both howled with laughter !!! He kept the money and we laughed all the way back to the office because by now my clothes were dirty, I had bought "his" lunch and he had taken my change !!

I had no problem with the fun he was having that day because Philip was very generous to me while I was employed there. Some great years that I will never forget. I find myself smiling when I replay in my mind so many events of those years.

I knew Philip a long time ago. Philip was a sweet and thoughtful person with an open mind and an open heart. He saw his friends as an extension to his family. He had a passion for life and a hunger for love. He was so very kind.

We had many adventures filled with joy and laughter. He was a creative spirit who embellished his war stories like a sage old man but always with a funny twist. He loved being the life of the party. He made people laugh and loved to celebrate life's simple and great moments.

He was once my best friend and my love. May he rest in peace. Andrew and Laurie, my condolences. I am truly sorry.

Phyllis, Laurie, Andrew and Family,

So sorry to hear about Philip. We had many good times over the years as kids in the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida. Lynn advised me of his death as I was going back to Florida after caring for mom. If mom would have been in better health, we would have come. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Andrew, per your request: Larger than life, a 100 - watt smile, followed by a hey parter! He made people smile, laugh at themselves, and forget about the world for a while. I am glad that our lives intersected. Cameron

Bill and I are saddened to hear of the passing of Philip. Our friendship dates back 30+ years and one of our fondest/funniest memories of Philip was his Blockhouse Steeplechase bumper stickers. They were classic and Philip was a marketing genius. We were on the edge of our seat every year to see his newest bumper sticker message . We will really miss him. Our love to Phyllis, Andrew, Laurie and your families.
