I visited Folly Beach for the first time over the Easter weekend 2024. I took my grandchildren to Pirates Cove Park and saw the plaque dedicating the park to Peter Beck. I wanted to know more about him so I came to this site. His boys would be long since grown by now and I hope they bring their children to this lovely park that their grandfather had a hand in creating. It sounds like your community suffered a terrible loss.

I only just learned of Peter's passing a few moments ago, when I opened up my just-delivered Gazette. I was shocked to see his name in the obituaries and express my deepest condolences to you and your family.

Peter was, indeed, a wonderfully good guy (I was a fellow Class of 1989 PENN classmate). If you have any additional information on Peter's most recent years, I would be grateful for learning more about him before you lost him earlier this year.

Sincerely,

Dear Laura,

I am a former law school classmate of Peter's.

I grew up and now live in Beaufort. Peter and I had much in common, including a love of the Lowcountry, the water and sports.

There are two things unique to Peter which I will always cherish: his wonderful smile and his sincere compassion for others.

I am also a father of two sons (Lawton and Luke, ages 10 and 7). We spend a lot of time on the Beaufort River. If you and the boys are ever in Beaufort, please look me up. I would love to get together, maybe go fishing, crabbing or just go for a boat ride.

Their Daddy (and your husband) was very, very special.

Our prayers are with you all.

Sincerely,

Frampton Harper

Dear Laura:

I am so sadden and shocked to hear of your loss. My heart goes out to you and your boys. Peter had a beautiful spirit. I think of him often and will always remember his clever way with words, jaunty walk, and million watt smile.

Laura, I am so saddened about Peter and I have thought about him and you every day since I heard the news last week. I remember getting big hugs from yall at Hawke's memorial at Bert's when I was going through the shock and pain myself. That was my last hug from Peter and it was healing for me that you both were there. I know how much pain you must be in and send my love and my best hug awaits when I get the chance to see you again. Peter was one of my favorite people in high school and I remember him as a sensitive sweet soul who reached out to people with kindness. Know that so many others are grieving this loss with you. I will never forget him.

Laura: so deeply sorry for your loss and for the boys. Peter was one of my favorite people, I tried to emulate him at times, but he was just too unique. Peter picked me, out of a stack of resumes to work with him. I'll never forget that. He was brilliant and I enjoyed working with him - his mind always came up with the best ideas to solve a problem ... he was beautiful that way.

Laura - I'm another of Peter's high school classmates whom you haven't met. Like others who have written, I have fond memories of Peter as both a classmate and a soccer teammate - plus an enduring image of him walking around P-G wearing a bow tie with aplomb, something most of us didn't dare try. Although I left Charleston literally the day after our 1985 graduation and did not have a chance to continue the relationship, Peter will forever be a part of fond memories of growing up in the Lowcountry and going to P-G. You and your children are in our thoughts and prayers.

Laura,

I was deeply saddened to hear about Peter's passing earlier this month.

News of your fledgling family's loss hit me particularly hard, as it brought back memories from my own childhood, when my father suddenly passed away at the age of 35, leaving my mother alone with 3 boys, ages 5,4 & 1. The last time I saw you and Peter was at the The Black Baud Stadium during a Charleston Battery soccer game a few years ago. You were walking the perimeter of the field, arm in arm, and I could tell that you two were very much in love. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy in your time of mourning & may God bless you and your children.

To Laura and the rest of Peter's family: I'm terribly sorry. I did not know Peter at all, but I learned of his death from a co-worker and I spent Sunday reading about his passion for surfing and the sea.

May you all find some peace as the pain subsides, however slowly. My heartfelt sympathy to your whole family.

I am currently a second-year law student at the Charleston School of Law and also met Peter through the Surfrider Foundation. When I had my doubts early on in law school, I looked to Peter, although I did not know him particularly well, as an example of a life in balance. His positive energy, passion for surfing, love of the environment, and overall leadership was inspiring and represented the sort of life I desired to live in Charleston. It's amazing how one can come to learn so much about another's personality simply by seeing them smile... My thoughts go out to the Beck family, I hope your love for one another only grows stronger during these difficult times.

Peter was a valued member of our organization, and as the Charleston Surfrider Foundation's representative, he played an important role in the fight to save Morris Island from development. His hard work was instrumental in the recent purchase of the island for preservation.

I wish to express my very deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Peter. Peter has always held a very special place in my heart and I cannot express how very sad I am. The world has lost a truly special soul. I remember the first time I ever saw him .... I can still see his handsome face smiling broadly in the teen nightclub we all frequented as teenagers. Red VW Karman Gias, Raymond Carver, The Clash, Cat Stevens, The Philadelphia Flyers, John Prine, Oyster parties, Dixie Chicken, Sullivan's Island ...... so many things bring smiles to my face and remind me of Peter. May his wife and children and the rest of his family know that he brought so much joy and happiness to so many others ...some that they may not ever know or see but that loved him just the same.
