Pauline Thompson Obituary

Pauline Powers Thompson SUMMERVILLE - Funeral services for Pauline Powers Thompson, 90, of Summerville will be held at 12 noon, Thursday, July 15, 2010, at First Baptist Church of West Columbia. Reverend Lonnie H. Shull, Jr. (Pastor Emeritus of First Baptist Church of West Columbia) will preside. Entombment will follow in Southland Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in West Columbia. The family will receive visitors at Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia from 6-8 Wednesday evening. Mrs. Thompson was born April 27, 1920, in Williamsburg County, SC, she was the youngest of seven daughters of Thomas Daniel Powers and Lula Carter Powers. She married her sweetheart - the late Will Lesesne Thompson on May 9, 1942, in Gresham, S.C. This couple became a shining example of the "Greatest Generation" of Americans who lived through the Great Depression and World War II. Mrs. Thompson managed the family's farm and raised their first daughter while her husband served in the U.S. Army during the war. In the early 1950's, the family (by then including four daughters) moved to the midlands. Mrs. Thompson was a loving parent and exemplary homemaker. She also managed her own seamstress business while living in Cayce, West Columbia and Pine Ridge Communities. She was a Sunday School Teacher, Department Leader, and President of the Women's Missionary Union at Holland Avenue Baptist Church in Cayce. She also taught Sunday School at First Baptist Church of West Columbia for several years and as Chairperson of the Bereavement Committee there, she helped many local families deal with the loss of a loved one. Mrs. Thompson leaves a loving family legacy that includes four daughters and sons-in-law Billie and Bruce Kinnie of Chapin, Rose and Alton Hailes of Shubuta, Miss., Janet and Fred Luxmore of Summerville, and Paula and John Jacobs of Lexington; six grandchildren, Taunya and Bob Haun of Greenville, Shannon and Jennifer Hailes of Pass Christian, Miss, Lee Luxmore of Summerville, Lori and John Loftis of West Columbia, Trina and Baylor Strawhorn of Fort Mill and Toni and Brandon Goff of Blythewood, as well as thirteen great-grandchildren, one sister, Cleora Powers Thompson and nieces and nephews. 'Grandma' is predeceased by her husband, five sisters and a granddaughter, Sonya Marie Hailes. The family would like to thank Robin Smalls, Marci Caldwell, Willia Brown, Pam Ward, Alaina Abusara, Jenny Jackson, Stacy Quad and Jamii Fuseler for the loving care and kindness provided to Mrs. Thompson during her last years at Janet & Fred Luxmore's home in Summerville. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Odyssey Hospice Healthcare, 3870 Leeds Ave., North Charleston, SC 29405. Dear "Thompson Girls",
You are all in my thoughts and prayers, as you go through this difficult time. I wish I had been able to come to Columbia for the visitation and service. The news of your mom's passing has brought back so many good memories of times spent with her...from my childhood through adulthood. I remember eating at her table on Sundays after church, playing paperdolls with you girls in the afternoon, and then having her take us back to church for Training Union, at night. I have spent many hours with her sitting and talking and laughing, while she was sewing...even spending time in the kitchen with her while she cooked or baked those wonderful cakes. (I have shared her Caramel Pound Cake with many friends!) She was loved by my entire family and will be missed!! May your special memories bring you great comfort in the days ahead.
Love to you all!
