McKENZIE, Paula EHRHARDT - Mrs. Katharene Paula Bretz McKenzie, 84, of Ehrhardt, SC, formerly of Rome, GA, died Saturday, June 30, 2007 at Bamberg Nursing Center. Funeral services will be held 3 pm Monday, July 2, 2007 at The Brice W. Herndon & Sons Funeral Home, Ehrhardt-Bamberg Chapel. Interment will follow in Ehrhardt Cemetery. Mrs. McKenzie was born July 5, 1922 in College Park, GA and was the daughter of John Arden Bretz and Katye Harris Bretz. She was the widow of Martin L. McKenzie, whom she married August 14, 1965 in Rockmart, GA. She attended schools in College Park, GA and graduated from College Park High School. In 1943, she graduated from Georgia State College for Women (now known as Georgia College and State University) with a major in Home Economics; and graduated in 1949 from the University of Tennessee with a major in Textiles and Clothing. She taught schools in Claxton, Jesup, and Atlanta, GA, Portland, Oregon, and Ehrhardt, SC. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Rome, GA and was a former member of Ehrhardt Baptist Church, having worked with the children's program in various churches for many years. She was a beloved sister-in-law and aunt. Surviving are: her brother, Henry Nevin Bretz and his wife Ethel of Springwood, LA; sisters-in-law, Jacqueline McKenzie Hiers and her husband James Everett of Ehrhardt, Sara Louise McKenzie Caldwell and her husband Dennis of Ehrhardt, Barbara McKenzie Hiers and her husband Alyea of Ehrhardt, Montye McKenzie DuBose and her husband Ronald of Charleston, and Jenny McKenzie Thomas and her husband Curtis of Charleston; brother-in-law, James M. McKenzie of Lexington; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers, John Arden Bretz and Richard Harris Bretz; and a sister, Emily Sue Bretz.
