Paul Brawley Obituary

Paul B. "Dick" Brawley ROCK HILL, SC - On June 3, 2011, Dick Brawley, 90, died peacefully at Westminster Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. He was born Feb. 24, 1921, in Chester, S.C., to the late Paul Blackburn Brawley Sr. and Janie Canupp Brawley. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Helen Dunlap Brawley; three sisters, Ruth, Mally and Sally; four brothers, Judson, Blackburn, John and Jack; two daughters, Paula Malone and Merilyn Hoffman; and a son, John D. "Jackie" Brawley. A celebration of life for Mr. Brawley will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 5, 2011, at Woodland United Methodist Church, 801 N. Cherry Road, Rock Hill, preceded by a private burial at Grandview Memorial Park. The Rev. Posey Belcher will be officiating and will be assisted by the Rev. Dr. Larry Parker and the Rev. Marsha R. Bentley. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the fellowship hall at Woodland UMC. Mr. Brawley's early career began in California in the aircraft industry. He studied engineering at both U.C.L.A. and Vanderbilt. He spent the majority of his life in Rock Hill and founded Brawley Coffee Service. He was a charter member of Woodland United Methodist Church, where he served in many leadership capacities. He was Past President of the Rock Hill Golden Kiwanis and active throughout his life in community affairs. He was a member of the Hejaz Temple of Greenville and York Lodge No. 385 AFM and a former member of the BPOE and the Lions Club of Rock Hill. "Papa Dick" as he was affectionately known, had a "green thumb" when it came to rooting plants. He had the distinction of being featured on several occasions in The Herald for his famous bean plant. Mr. Brawley is survived by his sister, Jane B. May; his son, W. Scott Brawley (Linda) of Lexington, S.C.; four grandchildren, Catherine Templeton (Morgan), Will Brawley (Mandy) and Scott and Alan Malone; as well as 10 great-grandchildren. The family wishes to express their appreciation to Papa Dick's dear friend, Mrs. Mary Rawls; his three angels, Faye H. Hartzell, Marilyn Rogers and Marsha Bentley who faithfully visited with him every week; the wonderful staff at Westminster; as well as the staff at Hospice & Community Care; and his primary care physicians, Drs. Nimish and Shephali Patel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Walker Foundation, the fundraising arm of the S.C. School for the Deaf and Blind, 355 Cedar Springs Road, Spartanburg, SC 29302. Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel is assisting the Brawley family. Scott and Linda, My prayers are with you. I love your Dad and the rest of the family. Remember the drugstore next to your house on Oakland Ave.? I worked with Jackie there. Papa Dick was one of a kind! Heaven is even brighter now with both Mama B and Papa B. Much love, Cassie Monroe Gebhardt
