Patricia Hines Obituary

Patricia Mayes Hines MAYESVILLE, SC - Patricia Mayes Hines, 61, died Saturday, May 29, 2010, at Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. She was active in the Anglican Church and a former member of her family's church, Mayesville Presbyterian Church. Born in Sumter, South Carolina, October 15, 1948, to James Edgar Mayes and Katie Beaty Mayes, she was a graduate of Ashley Hall School in Charleston, SC, and made her debut at the St. Cecilia Society in Charleston. Patricia was a first honors graduate of the University of South Carolina's Honors College and was also selected S.C. Maid of Cotton by the National Cotton Council, Memphis TN. She received her master's degree in English at the University of Virginia and continued to be involved in education at various levels in her career. She was particularly proud of her appointment to the U.S. National Commission on Libraries and Information Science (NCLIS) in 2003, which promoted reading as the key to education. Patricia also proudly served as chief of staff for domestic policy for President Reagan, and subsequently became Assistant Secretary of Education for Research and Information under the elder President Bush. She often stated it was a privilege to serve in Washington; she cherished all the lasting friendships she made through her years of public service. Survivors include her husband Richard Towill Hines; a son, James Williams; a daughter, Kathleen Mayes; a sister, Kathleen M. DuBose and her husband Dr. E. McDonald DuBose; a brother, James E. Mayes, Jr. and his wife Lisa Jackson Mayes; and several nieces and nephews. A Requiem Mass will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, at the Chapel of St. Charles the Martyr, Mayesville, with the Rt. Rev. Keith L. Ackerman, former Episcopal Bishop Quincy, IL, the Rev. Dan C. Clarke and the Rev. Thomas W. Allen officiating. Active pallbearers will be members of the Society of King Charles, the Martyr. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Andrews Foundation, P.O. Box 169 Mayesville, SC 29104. The family will receive friends all other times at the family home in Mayesville. You may sign the family's guest book at www.bullockfuneralhome.com Bullock Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memories and Condolences
for Patricia Hines

Not sure what to say?

Dear Richard,

Roan Garcia sent me an email about Patricia's passing, and I just received it today. I was saddened to hear the news. Joy and I send our condolences, and our prayers to you, your family and your children. I well remember the first time I met you and Patricia in the NIE office in Washington, DC. Patricia had the biggest smile, and from that day forward we were friends. We worked together in different capacities in the Reagan Administration, and I will never forget her kindness to me during some rather challenging times during our tenure with President Reagan. I know, without a doubt, that and the life spent caring for her family and others has made a powerful impact on this world....I am a beneficiary too. God bless you and your children.

Dear Richard, Wills and Kathleen:

We were so saddened by the news of the death of Patricia. We all loved her very much and know that you will miss her terribly. She was so good to Aubrey, Bailey, and I. Aubrey and I shared several meals with her in Rome and our time with her and Kathleen and Wills will be cherished even more now She thoughtfully called about Bailey and Aubrey in their time in school in Charleston, and each call was kind and charitable. We appreciated her time more than you know. As you know, she was a special, special person and she will be missed here on earth. The blessing is that you will see her again! Write down your memories!

Dear Richard, Wills and Kathleen,

Patricia was the sister I never had. She gave of herself to everyone. She will be forever missed. I had known her for 30 years and she has helped and touched so many lives as no other person that I have known. She led by example. In my eyes, she was a guardian angel to many. She always saw the good in every single person with whom she dealt. And she was a great mother, giving it all to her two children.

May God grant you three the fortitude that you need during these difficult times. There is no doubt that she is in heaven and she will be looking after Wills and Kathleen from there.

I thank God that I came to know her. I will never forget Patricia.
