Pamela Quattlebaum Obituary

Pamela Tovey Quattlebaum Charleston - Pamela Tovey Quattlebaum passed away peacefully on Friday, March 18, 2016. She was born in Charleston, SC to the late H. Merrick Tovey and Katherine Landrum Tovey on June 10, 1946. Pamela attended St. Andrews High School before attending the University of South Carolina, where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority and was crowned Homecoming Queen in 1966. Pamela contracted Parkinson's Disease at an early age, and she became a tireless advocate raising awareness and treatment for the disease. As the disease advanced, she insisted on fully engaging with her friends, family and activities important to her. She became a role model to others suffering from Parkinson's. Pamela hosted and attended many fundraising events for Parkinson's, representing strength and beauty in spite of the disease. Family and friends were Pamela's truest loves. She grew up hunting and hiking with her beloved father and sisters, and spent summers riding horses with her dearest friends. Recognizing Pamela's wonderful grace and poise, she was chosen as Miss Charleston in 1965. Pamela was an admired hostess to her friends, expressing her love for them through her charm and the exquisite way she entertained. Pamela and her husband, Alex, spent a great deal of their time at their home in Inverness, Scotland, where they entertained house and shooting parties for many years. Pamela is survived by her husband, Alexander McQueen Quattlebaum, Jr.; her son, Timothy Merrick Hussey and his wife, Elise; her sisters, Kay Tovey and Susan Tovey Mixson and her husband, Lonnie; her step-sons, Alex Quattlebaum III and his wife, Kim, and their sons, Mac and John Henry; Scott Quattlebaum and his wife, Marlene, and their daughter, Isabel, and Michael Quattlebaum. A Celebration of Pamela's Life will be held Tuesday, March 22, 2016, at St. Philips Church, 142 Church Street, at 2:00 p.m., with a reception immediately following in the church hall. The family wishes to thank all of those who loved and cared for Pamela throughout all of her days. The family requests that donations, in lieu of flowers, be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation (donations can be made online "In Memory of Pamela Quattlebaum" at https://www.michaeljfox.org). Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR., INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. Just the other day I was telling someone about Pam. When we were in high school
she taught me how to dance and her Dad would pick me up on Saturday nights and take Pam and me to a local TV station (Charleston's version of American Bandstand) to dance on TV with other couples. At times she would sing in my ear along with the female vocalist, and had a magnificent voice. Her smile lit up a room and I miss her greatly.

Pam's father used to take us to the TV station on Saturday evenings to dance on Charleston's version of American Bandstand. We warned people to give us plenty of clearance as Pam would twirl a wide path and occasionally other teens got knocked over. She had a golden voice and would sing to me as we danced. Her smile was her trademark and I will forever be grateful to have been her friend during our high school days.

I am so sorry for your loss. Pam and I were dance partners during our high school years --wonderful memories. She was loved by all who knew her.

Pam and I were good friends and dance partners during high school when I went to Porter Military Academy. I remember when she stopped me in the midst of a shag dance and told me I didn't know how to dance -- from then on she and another friend from Grace Church, Barney Thompson, taught me how to dance. Her Dad would drive us to Channel 5 on the weekends to dance on their version of Bandstand. She would sing while we danced --beautiful voice.
we would clear the dance floor -- she would knock people over if they didn't get out of our way. I took her to our ring hop at PMA. Have a couple of beautiful pictures of her. I just learned of her death -- I am so sorry for your loss -- she was an angel.

To a wonderful woman that I dearly loved, my aunt and god mother. She was like an older sister to me and I will surely miss her smile and laughter. I will never forget all the days I spent with her while I was growing up. She was a fantastic role model to me and always will be.

The loss of Pamela is truly the loss of a wonderful, warm and compassionate person. I have known Pam since our St. Andrew's High School days and I was the one extremely lucky guy that had the honor to accompany her to our Senior Prom in 1964. Just yesterday, it seems. In the ensuing years, I have seen her always as a consistently warm, charming and caring friend - always with that sweet smile and soft, oh-so-Southern voice and manner. She was the epitome of elegance, class and grace. When life challenged her, she was courageous and brave. It is truly a sad feeling
to realize that she will not be with us anymore, but the comforting memories in knowing her will always be close.

I am so sorry for your loss. I have known Pam since our St. Andrews days and have many fond memories. The last reunion that I attended, Pam was dancing and had a smile for everyone. She will be missed.
