Norma Attaway Obituary

Norma Cain Hedrick Attaway Mt. Pleasant - Norma Cain Hedrick Attaway, beloved friend and lover of life and animals, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, April 8, 2020 after a valiant battle with Leukemia/AML. Due to the recent historic events of COVID-19, a celebration of life has been postponed at this time. A future celebration of Norma's life will be held in the chapel of J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel. Norma was born February 8, 1934 in Johnson City, TN the daughter of Calvin F. Cain and Mary Butler Cain. She is survived by her grandchildren - Calvin, Patti, Mark, and Rhys Hedrick, of Concord, California; a stepson, Hubert H. Attaway, III of Charleston and one brother, James Cain (Charlotte) of Johnson City, TN. She is predeceased by her husband, Lt. Colonel Hubert H. Attaway, Jr., and her son, Andre Hedrick. Norma was a retired program analyst with the Southern Division, Naval Facilities Engineering Command. Norma was very active in 12 step recovery, with 38 years of sobriety at the time of her death. She helped many women in their journey of sobriety and was loved by the rooms which she attended regularly until her death. In her retirement, she enjoyed traveling the world; Vegetarianism, Yoga, Ayurveda, and the Turtle team of Sullivan's Island, SC. She spent hours in her garden, growing vegetables, herbs, and various local flowering plants. Her sweet little three-legged rescue dog, Ginger filled her last years with joy, laughter, and walks at Pitt Street Bridge with friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Charleston Animal Society, 2455 Remount Road, North Charleston, SC, 29406; www.charlestonanimalsociety.org. I met Norma walking the beach, only to find that she also lived right around the corner from me. What a gentle, beautiful soul. I moved away from Mt Pleasant, and just checked up on her only to find that she passed. Norma made everyone's life better and she will be truly missed. Rest Easy, friend.

I knew a day would come when I checked up on you I would find your obituary. As time went by it was easier to believe you would be around forever, silly of me I know. I cherish more than you would ever know a conversation that took place in Florida, just you and I, the day I learned so much about my Mom from you and your memories. You who knew her from the day she was born until the day she died. I never knew her as adults, but in small ways you gave that to me. More than that, you shared with me your knowledge of her feeling on extremely important issues. Adult feelings that Mothers do not discuss with their 15 year old daughters. For many many years I've watched from a distance you and your life. I will miss the part of you I've kept inside of me in a safe place. I believe I shall go pull out a photo album of a young woman's wedding pictures who looked so beautiful but more than that, she look strong, capable, knew who she was and where she was going. Confident and comfortable with herself. And the young flower girl. Who looked at you that day and caught with a camera, how she hoped one day to feel about herself. Sadly, she never did.

Dear Norma, You enriched my life and Lews by being our neighbor for over 20 years. You were never too busy to share a cup of tea and talk about your newest highlight. Usually it was about the beautiful sunrise, the joyful walk with Ginger on the Beach, your next adventure with your lomi lomi friends.... it was always sometimes fun and healthy. You left us too soon, although Im sure you were looking forward to seeing your only son, Andre again, especially. Well miss you and will think of you and your sweetheart often.
