Neil Demaree Obituary

Dr. Neil David Demaree MT. PLEASANT - Dr. Neil David Demaree passed away on July 1, 2025. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at 1:00 PM, at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., West Ashley Chapel, located at 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr - West Ashley Chapel Born on November 15, 1955, in Beaufort, South Carolina, David was the son of Neil Clements and Ann Crisp Demaree. He was the second of four children and a graduate of Middleton High School, Wofford College, and the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry. After completing dental school, David began his military service in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps, serving four years on active duty followed by twenty-one years in the Naval Reserve. He retired with the rank of Captain. David went on to establish a successful dental practice in Marion, Virginia, where he served his community for thirty-one years. After closing his practice, he continued his professional journey working with the State of Virginia and Wytheville Community College. He later retired to Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, to reunite with the love of his life, who stood by and cared for him during his illness. Committed to service, David was an active member of the Kiwanis Club and volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters. He was also a dedicated runner and golfer, proudly completing his first marathon at the age of sixty. He was preceded in death by his father, Neil C. Demaree. David is survived by his mother, Ann Demaree, his estranged wife, Martha Demaree; his daughters, Stephanie Demaree (Adam Fulmer), Melanie Maggy (Matthew Maggy), and Mackenzie Pragdat (Matt); and four beloved grandchildren, Iris, Violet, Benjamin, and Clara. He is also survived by his siblings, Becky Scully (Frank), Jim Demaree (Susan), and Susan Hughes (Tony), along with many loving nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The ALS Association or Wofford College. A memorial message may be sent to the family by visiting our website at www.jhenrystuhr.com.

Dave was there to support all his daughters and their team mates for the Laso and high school swimming programs. He always stepped up to do anything to help the swim team coaches. Dave was a present father and actively supported his daughters in their busy lives as teenagers. Dave and Martha worked hand in hand as a team to enable each daughter to realize her full potential and to become wonderful adults.

David was a highly gifted professional, and a man of great intellect. And he certainly helped innumerable people in his work as a Navy, and civilian, dentist. He loved conversation and we could enjoy discussions far, deep, and wide. Even though my family and I had lived in Marion, Virginia for two years in the mid-80´s, we never met David until he moved to the Charleston area. It is indeed a "small world" and I wish we´d known each other much longer.

Like all veterans, David was a brave, determined man, and this was never more clear as he courageously fought the progressive battles against ALS.

May our friend David rest in peace within God´s grace. I thank all the professional medical staff who helped him through his suffering. And my deepest sympathy goes to David´s family, loved ones, and friends.
