Nat gave me my first teaching position in 1974...I worked at James Elementary School for 3 years..I continued to work in Charleston County Schools until I retired in 2003. I can say without any hesitation, Nathaniel Washington was The Best Principal I ever worked under. His love for his students and faculty was evident. No other principal could get mothers and fathers who may not have lived in the same house to be active participants in their childs school.Standing room only at PTA meeting. There will never be another Nathaniel R.Washington.❤...

One of our biggest 'fans' on the sidelines of mine and Najeema's basketball days at Ashley Hall. He called me '3 point' and was always such a faithful supporter - always there with an encouraging word and a smile. He is missed!

I was a student that benefited from having Mr. Washington as my elementary school principal. He was a disciplinarian who cared for and nurtured every child that entered through the doors of James Simmons Elementary School. We definitely need more educators in the world like Mr. Washington today. He is truly missed by many.

Mrs. Washington and Najeema,
I am so sorry for your loss.
Najeema you are the apple of your dad's eye. He always talked about you. He was the best boss I have every worked for. I am sure if you all had a reunion of James Simons, teachers, teacher assistants and students they would have stories to tell that would have you all laughing out loud. Just reading the obituary brings back some of the conversations we would have, especially how he gave me a stern talking to after I jumped in the middle of two large boys trying to stop a fight. Mrs. Washington, I can remember him telling me you had to cook a fresh dinner every night. I did not agree, he would have learned to eat left overs. He would have me in stitches as my grandmother would say. He had a great time with his staff. He got to know them and was able to relate to them, not many supervisors do that especially today. He was always willing to help his staff and the students. He went an extra ten miles. Just know he is blessed and in the best place in the world, with our father in heaven.

Some folks enter your life for a season and a reason. Nat and I worked together for years in District #20. He was an excellent, hard working, dedicated educator. He leaves behind such a rich legacy of possibilities. When so many doubted, Nat Washington believed. He believed in the possibilities of his students. One of the best principals ever. R.I.P.

To The Family of
Nathaniel "Nat" Washington
There are many reasons why "NAT" was special to me. He gave me my first job at James Simons Elementary School as a substitute teacher. "Nat" and my husband played basketball together for Burke High School. There friendship continued until my husband passed away. He was there for me, my daughter and grandson. The last time I saw him was in Ryan's with his brothers. We were very happy to see each other.

Prayers and condolences to the family. I taught at James Simons with "Nat" Washington as my principal. What an awesome man with the children! Back in the late 70's and early 80's , I felt that we the faculty and students could accomplish anything and everything because Mr . Washington believed in all of us. We will miss a kind and loving man. God's blessing to the family.

"AAAhhhhhhhh, Well, Well, Well, Kelli" is what he would say, whenever we greeted in my adult life. He was very influential in my life and ALWAYS encouraged me! Our last encounter was when I was pregnant with my daughter and I ran into him in the mall... The first he said, was "what are doing for yourself. He was always concerned about our well being. Mr. Washington created a lifetime of memories and forever friends for those of us who went to James Simons. I pray that his legacy continues to grow in all of us. May God continue to keep the Washington Family in HIS mighty hand.

My sincere and deepest sympathy to Mrs. Jenny, daughter and family. I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Washington at Sears. He ALWAYS talked about his family "Jennie Lou and Najeema" (the love of his life). His years as principal at James Simmons Elementary was his passion as he often shared. He was definitely a "no nonsense" man who just wanted the best for all he knew and met. His name alone was that of respect. He was the epitome of a true gentleman and leader. Take your rest Mr. Washington. We love you but God loves you best. R.I.P. as you will always be remembered.

I remember Mr Washington very fondly. He was my elementary school principal at James Simons. My father and him have the same name. He was so tickled by that. When I was in kindergarten I made a teddy bear face (I believe) out of construction paper and on the way to school dropped it in a puddle. I cried all the way to school and did not want to go inside my classroom. He saw me in the hallway and asked why I was crying. He proceeded to take me to my class, talked to my teacher and together, him and I, fixed my teddy bear. That was 31 years ago and still fresh in my memory.
Najeema and Mrs. Washington you have my deepest sympathy because Charleston has truly lost one of our Greats. God continue to bless you both with peace and understanding. Much love

I was so shocked to hear about the passing of one of the influential men in my life. Mr. Washington wasn't just my elementary school principal but one of my biggest cheerleaders. When I told him I wanted to be a judge in 3rd grade, he made it a point to chant "here comes the judge...here comes the judge" every time he saw me. He acknowledged all of my academic achievements in elementary school and kept up with me all the way through college. He pushed us all to be great and I will never forget the impact he had on my life or the word "antidisestablishmentarianism". Rest in peace Mr. Washington. My family and I are praying for Mrs. Washington, Najeema and the rest of the family. God bless.

For several days, the light dimmed. Then one day, the light was no more, but on Behalf of The Charleston Westside Tennis Club, the light has been rekindled and is shining brightly because Mr. Washington (Nate) as he was so fondly called put that light in our hearts. To the family, we would like to say thank-you for loaning Nate to us as our tennis teammate, tennis partner and tennis opponent. He was a dynamite tennis player who brought the best out of his opponents. When he was playing a match, his enthusiasm for the game could be heard through his voice which echoed on all courts. You would know when Nate was at The Jack Adams Tennis Center. His base and baritone voice all came together and were highly audible. Our condolences go out to the family in the form of happiness because we are elated that Mr. Nathaniel Robert Washington passed our way.
