Nancy Wooten Obituary

Nancy Ann Coleman Wooten ORANGEBURG, SC - Nancy Ann Coleman Wooten, 65, wife of William Patrick (Pat) Wooten, of Orangeburg, S.C., passed away Monday, December 31, 2018, at her residence after a battle with cancer. After a private burial, a memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, January 3, 2019, at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, 1980 Columbia Road, Orangeburg, SC 29115, with Pastors Carol and Robert Cannon officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. Nancy was born on February 18, 1953, to Billy Cohen Coleman and the late Lula Snyder Coleman and grew up in Saluda, South Carolina. She graduated from Saluda High School and the University of South Carolina Honors College where she received a B.A. in journalism. She also obtained a Masters in Mass Communication and a Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina. Throughout her life, she was a journalist, a magazine and newspaper editor, a lawyer, a teacher, a Master Gardener, and a frequent volunteer, and she pursued each of these roles with her characteristic enthusiasm and work ethic. She received awards for her writing while an editor at South Carolina Wildlife magazine and while a reporter and editor at The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg. But Nancy's life was defined most of all by her relationships with her family and friends. She especially enjoyed spending time with her husband Pat, her son Patrick Coleman Wooten of Charleston, her daughter Julia Wooten Principe of Columbia, and her three grandchildren, Emma Collins Wooten (5), William Fanjoy Wooten (2) and Coleman Ryan Principe (1). She also shared very close relationships with each of her three sisters, Claire Hesse (Raymond) of Aiken, S.C.; Caren Larate (Joe) of McCormick, S.C.; and Julia Johnson (Marshall) of Lexington, SC; with both of her parents; with her daughter-in-law Tara Wooten and her son-in-law Ryan Principe; with her nieces and nephews; and with so many friends from every stage of her life. Nancy had a soft voice but a personality and a heart too big to be captured with words. She was kind, thoughtful, humble, intelligent, funny, tenacious, hardworking, polite, and creative. She was a great story-teller but also a careful listener. Nancy looked for the good in others and the beauty in her surroundings, and she was an expert in both finding those things and describing them in unique and beautiful ways. She lived her life pursuing love, gratitude, beauty, hope, and faith, and she did so deliberately and skillfully. Nancy was an active member of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, her book club, the Odd Times Supper Club, the Gerry Player Circle, the Verdant Gardeners Club, the Community Bible Study of Orangeburg, the Rotary Club of Orangeburg, and the Junior Service League. She also served as a mentor at Mellichamp Elementary, as a volunteer for Meals-on-Wheels, and as a board member of Salvation Army of Orangeburg.
