Myrtle Long Obituary

Myrtle Long N. CHARLESTON - Myrtle Martha Long, widow of Kenneth Howard Long, Sr., died peacefully at home on Saturday, September 5, 2009. She was a devoted wife and mother, and faithfully cared for her husband during his years of final illness. Born March 16, 1918, at the Bend of Four Hole Swamp, Harleyville, SC, she was the daughter of Eliud Ozious Dantzler and Eugenia Martha (Hilton) Dantzler. Because of the depression, she moved from her family's farm to Charleston at the age of 14 to work at the American Tobacco Company on East Bay Street. In 1942, she went to the Naval Shipyard to help with the war effort. After welding training, she went to work in the electric shop where she met her future husband. They were married on July 3, 1944. For the rest of the war, she checked punch clocks, riding a motorcycle around the shipyard. After living in Charleston Farms and attending Ferndale Baptist Church, in 1957 she and her family moved to Deer Park and joined Deer Park Baptist. Her first love at church was missions. Mrs. Long served as WMU president, taught Sunday school and mission studies and worked with the GA's. At the laying of the cornerstone of the present sanctuary, she contributed to the time capsule stored there. She started a women's prayer group. She and her husband helped organized Northwood Baptist Church. They each came from a large family and those family relationships were deeply meaningful to them. They dearly loved their grandchildren and enjoyed traveling with them. Her great-grandchildren were a delight to her in her last years. An excellent housekeeper and money manager, Mrs. Long provided warm hospitality for visitors and church groups. She and her husband were blessed with many dear friends, with whom they visited and travelled. Though health problems kept her at home in recent years, she continued to pray for her church and pastor. She deeply appreciated the kindness of her caretakers and everyone who called, visited and helped her. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Freddie Dantzler, Crendall Dantzler, Halbert Dantzler, Lewis Dantzler and E.O. Dantzler; and her sisters, Edith Clark, Bertha Morton, Gracie Mizell and Annie Ricker. Mrs. Long is survived by her children, Julia Martha Long Towles and Kenneth Howard Long, Jr. and his wife Lorna; by her grandchildren, Louis Palmer Towles III, Angela Mundi Long George, and Martha Rebecca Marie (Towles) Sligh, as well as by Mundi's husband Michael Paul George, Mundi's mother, Theresa Walker and Rebecca Marie's husband William Hoeffler Sligh; by her great-grandchildren, Devon Kenneth Sligh, Kieran Louis Sligh, Aurora Lillian Martha Sligh, Kennedy Grace George, Madden Harper George and Lyla Walker George; by her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Margie Dantzler, Lynn Long, Pickett and Deloras Long, Robert and Bobbie Long, Thomas and Aileen Long and Mary Anne Long; and by many nephews and nieces. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 12, at 2:00 P.M. in Deer Park Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Riverview Memorial Park. Friends and relatives may call at Greenridge Road in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTHWOODS CHAPEL on Friday between 6:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M. A memorial message may be written to the family by visiting our website at www.jhenrystuhr.com. In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

Dear Julie and Kenny,
I was sorry to read in the morning paper about the passing of your mother. It was a lovely tribute to her. Although I am in NC and unable to see you at either the visitation or service this weekend, please know that Bill and I will both keep you in our hearts and prayers.

My aunt Myrtle was quite a shopper. She always stopped by the house to show us what she got. I spent more time at her house as a young girl than my own.She liked sewing and made me two dresses. She wanted my mother (her sister) to go out for lunch. But my mother liked staying at home. I've never told anyone that mom give me $5 to go with her out to eat. I enjoyed eating lunch with her. I cant remember the place but it was across the Ashley River. She will be greatly missed.

Julie, Kenny,& Family,
Just want to say how sorry we are at Aunt Myrtle's passing away. I so enjoyed visiting with her with Rita a while back; I still have the picture of her that I took that day. She was a very special person and I am sure she will be fondly remembered by the many people she came in contact with during her life.
We pray that you will find comfort in our Heavenly Father during this time. I am sure there will be a grand reunion of all of the Dantzlers up in Heaven! Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I enjoyed the time that I have spent with you on Saturday. You will be missed, but now you and all of you meaning you and your brothers and sisters are all back together once again and also you are all with your parents. Tell everyone in heaven that I said hello and that I miss them all and also watch out my George because he will talk you forever and ever. Also tell him hello and that I am ok.

Dear Kenneth and family,
Our sincere condolences on the passing of Myrtle Long.
“For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord”.
