Mozelle Myers Obituary

Mozelle W. Myers Charleston - Mrs. Mozelle Williams Myers, daughter of the late Reverend Willie Williams and Inez Williams Brown, was an Honor Graduate in Burke High School's Class of 1954. She also graduated Summa Cum Laude from Claflin University in 1958 where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree. Mrs. Myers furthered her education at the University of Notre Dame receiving a Masters of Science degree in 1972. With a love/ quest for learning, she did further studies at South Carolina State University, the University of South Carolina, and the College of Charleston. At an early age, Mrs. Myers' parents instilled in her the desire to achieve. They often told her that faith in God, education, and manners would take her places that money could not buy. Mrs. Myers loved teaching. Her students often asked her to give them a break. Her response was simple: "There's too much to learn and so little time to waste. You can live to be 100 years old and still not learn all you need to know." She was intentional about motivating her students to be all they could become. Mrs. Myers received a Governor's Award for making a difference in the lives of her students. She loved teaching at Bonds Wilson High School and later retired from North Charleston High School. Mrs. Myers had a heart for God. She loved to study the Bible and ancient history. One of her proudest accomplishments was climbing the Rocky Mountains in Colorado to excavate rare rocks and fossils. Mrs. Myers also had a heart for family and friends. She never met a stranger. Family and friends found it so easy to love her. Affectionately dubbed, "The General" she wielded her power gracefully and she was always willing to take charge. An inspiring First Lady of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Mrs. Myers eagerly supported her husband's mission in ministry while holding progressive leadership positions in the church and in her community. A member of the Women's Missionary Society for over 50 years, Mrs. Myers held the following positions: Local and Conference Level YPD Director, Conference Level Tanner Turner Memorial Committee, Episcopal Level PME Director, and Handy Simmons Scholarship Commissioner. In addition, Mrs. Myers served as President of the Conference Branch Ministers' Spouses, Widows, and Widowers Organization Plus P.K.; Life Member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., former Basileus of Gamma Zeta Chapter and President of the North Area Teachers Association. Not one who had a lot of spare time, she loved fine shoes, hats, fine dining, and the theater. Gardening provided her much pleasure. Mrs. Myers married her college sweetheart and classmate, Presiding Elder Samuel L. Myers (retired). In 2008, they were both honored and marched in the Claflin Univerity Commencement as Golden Graduates. She is the mother of two lovely and devoted daughters, Angela and Sarita and "grandmother" to the granddog, Maxey. Her favorite words of inspiration: "Lord, when it's my time to leave, let me come home to you with a clean heart and a peaceful soul. I have fought a good fight; now let me rest in your loving arms." She leaves to celebrate her life, her loving husband of 61 years, her beautiful daughters; a special grandson, Brandon Jackson-Williams; siblings, Rev. Dr. Alfred Williams (Sadie), Mrs. Luethel McNeil (Walter), Mrs. Mildred Williams, Mrs. Leila Daniels, Mrs. Rebecca Small, Mrs. Bessie Simmons, Mrs. Gloria Edwards (Joseph), Mrs. Susie Williams Manning, Mr. Leon Williams (Patricia); soul sister, Mrs. Almena L. Myers; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Dorothy Hill, Mrs. Evangeline Allen, Mrs. Lilly Ruth Myers; one uncle, Mr. Mark Williams; one adopted daughter Ms. Sharron Hilliard; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A brother, Mr. Isaac Williams (Evelyn), preceded her in death. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Wednesday, February 6, 2019, 11:00 a.m., at Greater St. Luke AME Church, 78 Gordon Street, Charleston, SC. Viewing will be Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. and the Wake Service will be held from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the church. There will be no viewing after the funeral service. The burial will be held on Thursday in St. Stephen, SC. February 5, 2019

Mrs. Myers was one of the few teachers that I actually paid attention to. I was young and not so bright, but she had a way of making even me want to learn Science. Whenever I think about high school, there are three faculty members that always come to mind. Mrs. Myers is always at the top of the list, then Mr. Marcus, and last but not least, Mr. Roper (NCHS). Thank you for putting up with me...and all other students that was just like me.
