He was a board member of the Colleton County Resource and Development Board from 1978-1982 being vice chairman his last three years. He was a member of the Accommodation Tax Board for several terms. In 1987, Mr. Hughes, donated the land for the Mayfield Park on Dowling Avenue. In 2003, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Walterboro-Colleton Chamber of Commerce. During Jackson's spare time, he enjoyed spending time with his family at the beach and playing golf with his golfing buddies. He was a long time member of Bethel Presbyterian Church. He and his wife of fifty years, Laura Lynn Campbell Hughes, attended many historical functions during their lifetime. Mr. Jackson Hughes is survived by two daughters; Camie H. Hiers (Thurston) of Walterboro; and Paula H. Hewitt (Billy) of Summerville; eight grandchildren, Lauren Hiers, Ansley Hiers, Micah Hughes, Rodney Bridge, Ashlie Ewers, Candace Heavner, Emmanuel Hughes and Joy Hughes and many great grand children. Ms. Camie and family,
I am deeply sorry to hear of your sweet father's passing. As you know our family has only been living in Walterboro for a few years and in the past year I met your father. We became Sunshine friends quickly and I adored him. He reminded me so much of my own wonderful grandfather. I will be praying for you and your family. What a wonderful home-going for Mr. Sunshine!
