Minor Mickel Obituary
MICKEL, Minor GREENVILLE, SC - Minor Herndon Michel, 79, of 415 Crescent Avenue, died Friday, February 18, 2005 at her home. She was predeceased by Buck Mickel, her husband of fifty-two years. Born in Elberton, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Mary Helen Smith Herndon and Fred Herndon. Mrs. Michel attended Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia and graduated from the University of Georgia. Mrs. Mickel was active for many years in the Greenville community, serving as a board member and treasurer of the Junior League of Greenville and on the boards of the Phillis Wheatley Association, the Rose Ball, the United Way, the Peace Center, the Community Foundation of Greater Greenville, and the Greenville Hospital Foundation. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greenville. She also served as the first woman chairman of the Board of Furman University and was a trustee emeriti. She received an honorary degree from Furman University and also received the Mary Mildred Sullivan Award from Furman. Mrs. Mickel was a member of the Shebas Investment Club, the Debutante Club of Greenville, the McKissick Book Club, and the Carolina Foothills Gardens Club. She was currently Chairman of Micco Corporation and Vice Chairman of the Daniel-Michel Foundation. Mrs. Mickel is survived by her three children and their spouses, Minor Mickel Shaw and her husband, Dr. Harold Ellis Shaw, Jr., Buck Alston Mickel and his wife, Tina Marie Mickel, and Charles Clark Mickel and his wife, Rachelle Ellison Mickel, all of Greenville. She is also survived by six loving grandchildren, Kathryn Shaw Howell and her husband, Robert Boyte Crawford Howell of Atlanta, Georgia, Carter Shaw Lowrance and her husband, Dr. William Thomas Lowarance of Nashville, Tennessee, Harold Ellis Shaw, III, Tyler Vaughn Mickel, Charles Clark Mickel, Jr., and Townes Alston Mickel of Greenville. The family appreciates the love and care given to Mrs. Mickel by her friends of many years, Daisy McDuffie and by her caregivers, Kathy Puntch, Jeanette Cunningham, Jeanette Johnson, Ida Franklin, Valerie Houston, Gloria Gaskins, Annie Glenn, Joyce McCray, Maxine Moore, Kimberly Smalls, and A.C. Moore. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, February 20, at 3:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Greenville. Entombment will be at Springwood Cemetery at the Mickel Mausoleum immediately following the service. The family is at 415 Crescent Avenue and will receive friends from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 19.
