Michael Wheeler Obituary

Michael Patrick Wheeler Mt. Pleasant - Michael Patrick Wheeler, 65, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of Christine Marie Jacques Wheeler, entered into eternal rest Sunday, November 21, 2021. His Funeral Service will be held Saturday, December 4, 2021 in the J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends at the funeral chapel Saturday from 1:00 pm until time of the service. Mike was born May 13, 1956 in San Diego, California, son of Shirley Jean Bishop and the late Robert Lee Wheeler. He began work at the Charleston Naval Shipyard as a machinist in Shop 38, then SDE 1390. He became the first NID Director of Training and instructed inspectors in the refueling of nuclear reactors. This intensive instruction was the first of its kind at the Charleston Naval Shipyard. His service at the Shipyard eventually led to the position of Head of Congressional and Public Affairs, including the role of Editor for the employee publication "CNSY Pride." When the Shipyard closed, Mike was the last official employee of the Charleston Naval Shipyard, wrapping up final press releases and interviews around this major event in Charleston's history. For his work at the Charleston Naval Shipyard, he was awarded the Meritorious Civilian Service Award by the Department of the Navy. A plaque in his honor is on the Shipyard grounds. Mike went on to work at the Medical University of South Carolina, first as Veterans Affairs Research Service Compliance Officer, then as Privacy and Information Security Officer, developing protocols and audit processes for quality assurance. He served on the MUSC faculty as an Assistant Professor. In February of 2021 he retired from MUSC, where he had most recently served as Clinical Research Program Coordinator. He was a graduate of Webster University, earning a Master's degree in Business Management. He was an avid Disney fan, body-builder and runner, and loved participating in the Charleston Dragon Boat Race fundraisers. He most enjoyed being a dad and a grand-dad. In addition to his wife, Christine and mother, Shirley, Mike is survived by his son, Michael Patrick Wheeler II (Michelle) of Washington, DC; his daughter, Parker Lane Bellamy (David) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; his sister, Denise Wheeler of North Charleston, SC; and his grandson, Tanner Bellamy. Memorials may be directed to MUSC Foundation/Hollings Cancer Center, 18 Bee Street, MSC450, Charleston, SC 29425. Celebrating the life of a very special man. From the first time we met Mike he welcomed us into his family. We always enjoyed his company & southern hospitality. Glad we had a chance to experience Disney with him. We have many great memories of our trip which we all know was a special vacation spot for him. The Epcot fireworks have a whole new meaning after watching them with him! Christy, Michael, Michelle, Dave, Parker, Tanner, Granny & Skipper we are looking forward to visiting soon to share all the wonderful memories of Mike´s life.

I am so sorry to hear of Mike's passing. Mike was never without a smile or a kind word. He always asked how you were doing, and loved to make you laugh. He entertained us at our Staff meetings with his humor and antics. Just the kindest person you could ever have the privilege of knowing. I will be praying for you all during this difficult time.
Sincerely,

While I did not work directly with Mike, I did interact with him from time to time at the Hollings Cancer Center. He was the nicest guy in the world. Always positive, always welcoming to others, always willing to lend a hand, always ready to laugh. A truly selfless, great human being. He will be missed. My sincere condolences.

It's surreal that I am writing this message. As I am doing so- teary eyed and extremely saddened, I know Mike would want me to be strong right now. Michael Patrick Wheeler, as I always called him, has been my friend since the 1st day I met him.

Mike, thank you for coming to see me in the office a few weeks ago. We hugged so tight and I am so grateful for that forever memory. You were my friend and the coolest person I have ever met! You ended every conversation we ever had with, "Love ya". I just want you to know that I "Love ya" right back. Ride high, my buddy

Broken Hearted,

While I am deeply saddened to learn of Mike's passing, I am not surprised to read of his enormous accomplishments, awards and contributions to our community. Mike was a positive, fantastic, and encouraging person. I worked with Mike at MUSC and he always saw the glass as half full, often making our jobs better. He was the happiest talking about his family. He would always "beam with light" when telling the stories about them. Wade and I send our deepest sympathies to Mike's entire family. He left us way to soon but not without making a lasting impression.

We are deeply hurt by hearing Mark has passed. Our prayers are with you always. I was always touched by Mike coming to RT 8th floor internal medicine to see you Chris during lunch, the walks you would have together, and seeing you both at secondary Sunday in Charleston. God keep you and your family strong through these difficult times. M&M

I had the pleasure of knowing Mike & his beautiful family the last 2 years when I worked as a caregiver for Mr. & Mrs. Jacques; both the Jacques & Wheelers immediately accepted me into their family & I learned we were connected in more ways than one: Mike & my father worked together at the shipyard so many years ago & he remembered me & my sister, Kim attending the employee family picnics with our parents Bc we stood out with our red hair...& Mike always said he was a good friend of my dad´s & would ask about him & all of my family, during the weekly visits he & Christy made to visit Pat. Even on brief visits he´d have a hug for me & always managed to inspire me somehow, be it to live healthy, or continue my education, or to look at the stars & Nasa space missions, the wildlife outside & yes, Disney! Most of all, his love for his family was immeasurable & I felt so honored to be a part of their lives, to witness love in its truest form, unconditionally. Chris, Pat, Ms. Shirley & Skipper, Michael & Michelle, Parker & Dave, sweet sweet Tanner, my heart breaks for y´all & I am so very sorry.

My condolence to the family.
We were good friends in high school at N Chas. HS. We worked together at CNSYD. I was a nuc elect. There are a lot of good memories. My favorite one is the time he got a camaro and punched the gas burning the rubber off the tires. We had plenty of escapades in our late teen years. I am sorry for the lost of such a good person. We could use a lot of people like Mike.
