Michael Shetler Obituary

Michael Shetler N. CHARLESTON - Michael Shetler, 80, of North Charleston, South Carolina, passed away on May 20, 2025. Born in Gladewater, Texas, on June 16, 1944, Mike was the son of Vernon J. Shetler and Ila M. Pearce. He graduated from high school in High Point, North Carolina in 1962 and went on to earn his degree from Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, Massachusetts, in 1967. Mike proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1967 to 1970 as a chaplain's assistant at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. His deep Christian faith guided both his service and his life. He dedicated three decades to teaching music in the North Charleston public school system (1970-2000). A talented and faithful musician, Mike served as a church organist for several congregations in the North Charleston area. He is survived by his siblings: Janice E. Yewell (Morgan); Gary B. Shetler (Kay); Curtis B. Shetler (Donna); and Timothy J. Shetler (Joyce). He will be laid to rest alongside his parents in Hemingford, Nebraska.

Met Mike back in 1967, the year I transferred to ENC. We kept in touch through the years, primarily through letter writing and later emails. I so appreciated his friendship.

I have known Michael since 1981. At the time, I was serving as organist at the former St. Peter´s by the Sea Episcopal Church in North Charleston. Michael had been one of my predecessors there and often substituted for me and at other churches in the following years. We borrowed music back and forth between us and enjoyed fellowship at meetings of our local chapter of the American Guild of Organists. We also shared teaching tips as we both were classroom music teachers. I last heard him play at a wedding I attended at First Christian Church on Orange Grove Road where he was serving as organist.
I will miss the professional friendship and will hold very fond memories of him as a fine musician and human being. My condolences to his family.

Daniel Smoak, Pastor @ Westminster Presbyterian Church CHS

May 23, 2025

Our hearts are saddened to hear this news. Westminster Presbyterian Church (West Ashley) is one of the churches where Mike served. When I came to Westminster as pastor in 2015, I got to know Mike- appreciating his giftedness, faith, and commitment to justice and mercy. He sang in our choir for years- even when he was no longer playing the organ here. We will grieve for him- but with the hope of resurrection through our LORD. Well done, Mike.
