Michael Porter Obituary

Michael V. Porter CHARLESTON - Michael Vernon Porter, 70, passed away on June 27, 2023. He was the son of Vernon A. Porter, USAF, and Christine Mills Porter. Michael was born on August 9, 1952 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He settled with his family in Charleston, SC at age 6, where he lived most of his life. He was a Boy Scout, who earned the Order of the Arrow. He graduated from the University of South Carolina with Bachelor's and Master's degrees in mathematics and education. His professional career of over 45 years was spent teaching mathematics in local public and private schools, international schools in Brazil and Norway, and private tutoring. He was known for his gift of teaching, and his sense of humor. He is survived by his wife, Lori, of 44 years; his beloved daughter, Alyssa (Marc Fennessy) of Boiling Springs, SC; his brother Gary Porter and family of Alexandria, VA; and many extended family members and friends who have been very supportive during his illness. The family would like to thank all friends and neighbors whose kind well-wishes will never be forgotten. Thanks to the MUSC Hollings Cancer Center and Roper St. Francis Cancer Center medical teams. And a huge thanks to the home health care and hospice nurses who helped Michael and his family with compassion and wisdom during his peaceful passage at home from this life to the next. In lieu of flowers, please give lots of love to the special people in your life and, if you wish, give a little extra to your favorite charity. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
