Michael Malinovsky Obituary

MALINOVSKY, Michael Dr. Michael R. Malinovsky of Charleston, SC, formerly of Franklin, NC, passed away Monday, May 26, 2008, after a long, hard-fought battle with cancer. He was 67. Born in Chicago, Illinois on July 1, 1940, Dr. Mike received his B.A. from Depauw University in 1962, his Masters in Clinic Psychology from the University of Florida in 1964, and his M.D. from Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. in 1969. Board certified in internal medicine, he began his medical career as a Naval physician (at Portsmouth Naval Hospital and then Naval Hospital Jacksonville) before moving into private practice (first in Franklin, NC and most recently in Charleston, SC at Roper Hospital's Kiawah-Seabrook Medical Center). Throughout his life, he took every opportunity to live life to the fullest. Dr. Mike felt privileged to practice medicine and honored to care for and get to know the many patients he treated over the years. He enjoyed the professional rapport and the personal friendships he shared with his many colleagues and co-workers. Outside of the office, he was an avid photographer, gardener, woodworker, reader, traveler and Civil War buff, and he took great pleasure in the friendships he made as he pursued these interests. But to him his greatest joy and his time most well-spent was with his family and close friends, especially his wife of 46 years, Susan O'Hare Malinovsky, his children, and his grandchildren. Whether it was coaching or watching sporting events, hiking in the mountains, biking around the islands, playing on the beach, boating in the rivers, or just visiting with friends, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend. He had a unwavering will to live a full and active life and an unfailing positive attitude in times of challenge and adversity. He touched many lives and many hearts. To know him was to love him. He will be dearly remembered and greatly missed. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Jessica M. Traynham (Easley, SC) and Jennifer D. Malinovsky (Atlanta, GA); a son, Michael O. Malinovsky and daughter-in-law, Robin B. Malinovsky (Atlanta, GA); six grandchildren, (Sawyer, Nicholas, Carson, Michael, Christopher and Taylor); his mother, Virginia Malinovsky; sister, Susan Trembley; and brother, Donald Malinovsky (all of Orlando, FL), and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, May 31, 2008, at 1:30 p.m., St. John's Parish, 3673 Maybank Highway, John's Island, SC 29455. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Blood and Marrow Transplant Unit at Roper Hospital, 316 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC 29401 or to the Ronald McDonald House, 81 Gadsden Street, Charleston, SC 29401. Arrangements are being handled by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL. Visit our guestbook at www.charleston.net/deaths.

I was so sorry to hear of the passing of Dr. Malinovsky. I called on him as a pharmaceutical rep for several years, and he was one of the kindest physicians I have ever met. He obviously cared so much about his patients and staff, and was very gracious to me through the years. I know that he will deeply missed by his family, friends, and anyone else whose lives were touched by his spirit. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Dear Mrs. Malinovsky and Family,
Our deepest sympathy, may knowing that you are in the prayers, hearts, and thoughts of others help you and yours through this time of sorrow.
We have known Mike since his arrival at Kiawah-Seabrook, he was a wonderful Doctor and friend who will be missed by all.

Karl and I were Seabrook Island patients of Dr. Mike's when he first joined the practice located just outside our gate. Initially we went to him because it was so convenient, but continued to see him until he retired because we knew there could be no better person to whom to entrust our health care. Among other things, he was a great diagnostician and (uncommon in his field) wasn't the tiniest bit arrogant -- quick to refer one to a specialist he thought could be more helpful and respecting always the patient's own intellect and right to be deeply involved in one's own medical care.

He listened.

He was kind, caring, witty and -- through his own medical problems -- an inspiration in courage and good humor. We missed him after retirement and will surely miss him now.

Our sincere sympathies to Susan and all his loving family.

My sympathy goes out to the Malinovsky family. Michael came in and out of my life and at every occasion he was always openhearted. That’s one of the many reasons so many people will miss him, however feel blessed to have known him.

I have to confess one reason I really liked Michael, was I found someone else that occasionally started reading magazines from the back. Go figure! I’m also fortunate to have a little step stool Michael made for Melissa, which I’ve held for over 30 years to give to my grand child. So he or she can as ask who made it? Then Melissa or I can let them know that it was crafted by your Great Uncle Michael, who like this little stool, put peoples lives back together as a great and loving Doctor and Father.

May God allow Michael to continue the work he started here. He will be missed!

We were patients of Dr. M's from the time he first came to Kiawah-Seabrook Medical Center until his retirement, and we both agree that of all the physicians we have ever had he was the best. Professionally and personally we loved him and miss him greatly.

Dear Dr.Mike and his family,

Dr. Mike, you were a caring doctor and a compassionate human being who was interested in everyone who sought your help and expertise, whether it was serious and extensive PI on vacation at Seabrook, or strep throat or baby's earaches. Thanks for all your help and guidance...but especially thanks for your example of how to confront adversity without letting it destroy your spirit. God is with you now and forever. He will keep you all under his wing.
With deep sympathy and great admiration,

Dear Mrs. Malinovsky and Family, I am very saddened to hear of Dr. "M".s passing, he was my physician for many years. He was always very concerned about my health and also offered many words of encouragement and always had a smile and positive outlook. I truly was sad to see him retire, but knew it was what he needed to do. I am so glad I had the opportunity to know him and will always remember him fondly. When he moved his office to Seabrook, he offered to find me a doctor closer to me, but I wouldn't have it - I had the best and wanted to keep the best.

Cousin Mike was an early inspiration to all of us family in the same generation. His drive, lofty goals and enviable successes both personally and professionally throughout his life served as a beacon to all of us who tried to follow. I am deeply indebted to his memory, and will both miss him and yet celebrate the humble elegance of his life. Thank you, Mike, and Blessings to you , Susan, and all of the family. Much love.

Susan and family my whole family is terribly sorry about your loss. Dr. Mike was not only our physician but also a dear friend. I tried to be the last patient he saw before he retired. Someone was late so I saw him early. Thank God I got the opportunity to express our feelings. He was a strong man and fought so hard to overcome his illness, always cheerful and so caring. Our thoughts and prayer are with you. Giving him up will be hard but he is in a much better place.

Dear Susan and Aunt Virginia,
I am so sorry for your loss. Although I did not know Michael well, I was always impressed by his joy and enthusiam, and "positiveness". I remember him best when Mom and I were visiting him and Susan in St. Louis and he had just gotten notice of his medical school acceptance -- boy were they happy! You were blessed to have him as a brother and son.
May your sorrow pass quickly. My prayers are with you. The peace of Christ be in your hearts. Extend my sympathy to his larger family.
Love,

Being the youngest of the "5" grandchildren of Dr. Mike's paternal grandparents, I was not around Dr. Mike nearly enough. However, I do remember watching him play QB at DePauw. And the few times I did visit him, Susan and Dr. Mike made me feel so welcome. He was also very reassuring and comforting during my mother losing a battle with cancer a couple of years ago.
Dr. Mike was very proud of his family. I'm sure he will be missed by the people whose lives he touched.
Dr. Mike, thank you for everything and being there when needed.

To Dr. Mike:
I’m not sure what to say… I have lost a dear friend, a family member and an inspiration. I had hoped to have you at our house for one more Lebanese food feast that you loved so much!
You epitomized the true meaning of loving husband, caring father and decent human being. Your uncanny connection with people is indescribable.
Selfishly, I am so sad to see you leave us so soon, there so much more for you to give and for me to learn. Thank you for the great memories…

May God bless your kind soul!
