Michael Jackson Obituary

Michael Jackson MT. PLEASANT - Michael Jackson, 82, surrounded by his family, passed away peacefully after a short illness. He resided in West Falmouth, MA, Isle of Palms, SC and Hopetown, Abaco, Bahamas. He was born in Boston, MA and graduated from Westminster School in 1949, from Harvard University in 1953 and received his Masters in Mathematics from Trinity College. For 44 years he was on the faculty of Westminster School, Simsbury, CT: teaching math and physics, coaching football, hockey and baseball, and maintaining the hockey rink-which is named for him. Mr. Jackson was a lifelong sailor, and won the Sears Cup-the national youth triple-handed championship. He was a member of the Chapoquoit Yacht Club and the Hopetown Sailing Club. Known for his prowess in the workshop, he built three cars, a gyrocopter, an amphibious airplane, two houses, and three boats. He is survived by his beloved wife Gail Sargent Jackson, his sister Phyllis Mills of New York City, his brother Tim of Dedham, MA, his four children and two step-children - Linda Silvers of Petaluma, CA, Jenny Jackson of Hopedale, MA, Michael Jackson, Jr. of Southborough, MA, Tim Jackson of West Falmouth, MA, Wayne Sargent of Orlando, FL and Debbie Hankinson of Mount Pleasant, SC. He was the cherished grandfather of Nathaniel, Samuel, Libby, Abigail, Geoffrey, Bryan, Tyler, and Landon. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Habitat for Humanity where Mr. Jackson regularly swung his hammer: East Cooper Habitat for Humanity, P O Box 1990, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29465 or online at eastcooperhabitat.org. There will be a memorial service at Sunrise Presbyterian on Sullivan Island, Saturday, July 13th at 2pm and on Cape Cod in late July. I am filled with loving and wonderful memories of Mr. Jackson as my high school math teacher. He presented in each day with great humor and kindness. Looking back, I feel as if he illuminated a brightness in me that I didn't know I had at the time. What a great gift he had, to command the best from his students and build knowledge and self confidense. My deepest sympathies to all of the Jacksons.
