Michael Finch Obituary

Michael Trezevant Finch, Sr. COLUMBIA, SC - A funeral service for Michael Trezevant Finch, Sr., 75, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, June 4, 2017 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 p.m. Saturday, June 3, 2017, at the funeral home. Mr. Finch died Wednesday, May 31, 2017, at Palmetto Health Baptist, the place of his birth on October 11, 1941, after an extended illness. Mike was a 30 year survivor of Multiple Myeloma, and an 18 month survivor of Myelodysplastic Syndrome, another type of bone marrow cancer. Mike was born the youngest son of Raymon Ronnie Finch, Sr. and Maxcy Monteith Rouquie Finch of Columbia and Sullivan's Island. Mike grew up on his dad's cattle farm in Dixiana, now underneath the I-26 and I-77 interchange, as well as at the family home on Sullivan's Island. In those settings, he developed his love for the outdoors. Mike later graduated from University High School in the class of 1960, and attended Newberry College. During his younger years, Mike worked for and was part owner of various family businesses in Columbia including: Richland Oil Company, Computer Records, State Golf, Fleet Services, American Garelli, Architectural Models, Digital Systems, and in the early cellular telephone industry tower site lotteries. Mike moved to the Isle of Palms around 1980, and joined his older brothers, Henry Finch and Raymon Finch, Jr. in further developing and operating the Wild Dunes Resort until they sold out of it in 1984. Mike then turned his attention to recreational land acquisition and management, beginning with his purchase of South Tibwin Plantation in McClellanville from 1985 to 1990, and then on to his beloved Butterfield Plantation in Allendale from 1990 to present. Mike spent many years cultivating and stewarding these wonderful properties, and many friendships evolved from times spent at these exceptional places. Carmen and Mike's children and their spouses and grandchildren will hold dear memories of their times with him at these magical places over the years. Mike was a founding member of the St. Andrews Sertoma Club 50 years ago, and took interest in "para-law-enforcement" by always driving a Ford Crown Vic, working with the Richland County Coroners office as a Deputy Coroner for 30-plus years, and also became involved through those contacts with the DMORT-WMD/ALL-HAZARDS team nationally. His unit was called upon to assist in casualty recoveries at Ground Zero September 2001, and later at Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Mike and his wife, Carmen, served honorably and for weeks at a time in those two disasters. Mike has spent the last 27 years owning and operating as only he could Butterfield Plantation in Allendale, SC. He is likely one of the most hands on owners of such a property anywhere in the Southeast, hands down. He truly loved that place, and there was no better steward to be met anywhere. Many, many people and events over the years there with him will always remain in our memories, along with many great and entertaining stories. Mike is survived by his wife of 19 years, Carmen Rivera Finch, RN; children, Michael "Mike" Trezevant Finch, Jr., MD (Jen) of Columbia, Amy Watkins Finch, RN (Nol) of Minneapolis, MN, and Margaret "Meg" Finch Harrison (James) of Columbia; his former wife and the mother of his children, Margaret W. Finch; grandchildren, Michael "Trey" T. Finch III, Riley G. Finch, Clark W. Finch, Max J. Finch-Raymond, Phebe H. Finch-Raymond, Margaret "Maggie" E. Harrison, and James "Burch" Harrison. Mike is also survived by a cousin, James Rouquie; sister-in-law, Frances Finch; brother-in-law, Adrian Rivera Jr.; sisters-in-law Hellen R. Anderson, Ketty Rivera, Madeline Garcia, and Janet Rivera (Carmen's sisters); and Mother- in -law Carmen Rivera (Carmen's mom). Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews and their children, as well as a host of good friends that have always looked out for him. We are so grateful for those individuals, especially in these last few months and especially those that helped "babysit" Butterfield in his absence. He was predeceased by his parents; father-in-law Adrian Rivera, Sr; and brothers, Henry Finch Sr and Raymon Finch Jr. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at SCOA and Palmetto Health Baptist Hospital, Dr. Steve Minter, and Dr. Rob Stuart at MUSC. Donations can be made to the Myeloma Foundation, 12650 Riverside Drive, Suite 206, North Hollywood, CA 91607; the Lower Savannah River Alliance, www.lowersavannahriveralliance.org; or to a charity of one's choice. David and I just learned of Mike's passing and we deeply regret that we were not at his Service. Mike has been a good friend since days at American Garelli. Over the years he was most gracious to invite to us to Butterfield and years ago to his guest house at Wild Dunes. Knowing Mike and the Finch family has been a very special part of our lives.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Finch
Through the Lower Savannah River Alliance. He was a great steward for the river and woodlands in our community. I also enjoyed his car collection and the times he took riding me in his prize possessions. Mike you will be missed by our community and we take comfort in knowing you are watching over our great outdoors from above.

Carmen, Mike was so blessed to have had you as his best friend during those wonderful years of enjoying nature's beauty with all of God's creatures. He found his soul mate in you, fully engaging in all of his life interests, from family gatherings, to travel, to hunting, to casualty recovery volunteer work. And then when he needed strong medical advocacy and tender loving care, he had his own nurse, who never left his side. I will always member Mike for his genuine humble character, with a rare sensitivity for the less advantaged. I believe he never lost sight of what is truly important in life. He will be greatly missed by so many. Each of your wonderful shared memories, and the love and prayers of your friends and family will see you through this tremendous time of loss. Love Karen

James and Elizabeth Rouquie Thank you Mike for your loving and caring of my family and especially my sweet sister Emily all through the years.

We were so fortunate to spend wonderful days at Butterfield Plantation through the years. Butterfield was Mike's passion and he loved to share his plantation with all that drove through the gate.

In addition to being friends we worked with Mike and Carmen on the DMORT-WMD / ALL HAZARDS team. Mike served his country in this capacity for many years as one of the first members.

We have lost our friend but we will always cherish those precious memories that we made together through the years.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you Carmen, Mike Jr, Amy, Meg and your families.
