Michael Delia Obituary

Michael A. Delia CHARLESTON - Michael A. Delia passed away Monday morning, November 5, 2012, at the age of 82. Michael was born August 26, 1930 in Berkeley Heights, NJ to Anthony and Louise Delia. Michael and his wife Angela of 56 years were longtime residents of Lebanon, NJ prior to moving to Charleston, SC nine years ago. Michael earned his B.S. Degree from Seton Hall University and was a member of the Cross and Crescent Honors Society. He served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, wrote the first U.S. Naval Diving Manual on scuba diving and worked with Captain J.Y. Cousteau to develop underwater equipment and systems for NATO. Michael founded Delia Associates in 1964, an international marketing communications firm. The company developed award-winning marketing programs for a broad range of organizations in the U.S. and abroad. Delia Associates served as the U.S. Representative for the three largest Trade Fairs in the world and was the first firm certified by the U.S. Department of Congress to organize USA group stands at overseas trade fairs. During the 1980's, the company worked closely with the Reagan Administration to foster U.S. exports. Under Michael's leadership, Delia Associates also developed and launched several successful US Trade Expositions, including Plastech and Export-Expo. The company was contracted by NASA to assist with the Commercialization of Space Program, and managed its European marketing and P.R. programs. During his career, Michael authored numerous articles on international marketing and trade fair participation, and was a frequent lecturer at university and industry forums. He retired in 2000, and Delia Associates, now in its 48th year, is successfully carried on to this day by his son, Ed Delia. Michael was a Founder and Director of Immaculate Conception School, a high academically rated Catholic School in Clinton Township, NJ. He was a member of the World Trade Club Association, Hibernian Society of Charleston, The National Italian American Foundation, the Society of Plastics Engineers, the Society of the Plastics Industry, the Citadel Mentor's Association, Citadel's Brigadier Foundation, and the Spoleto Society. Michael is survived by his four children: Carol Hollingsworth and her husband Andrew Hollingsworth, NJ; Gary Delia, FL; Michael E. Delia and his wife Linda, NJ; and Ed Delia and his wife Lori, NJ. He is survived by ten grandchildren: Bryan Hollingsworth, Janet Hollingsworth, Rachel Delia, Ted Delia, Chelsea Delia, Jack Delia, Christian Delia, Edward M. Delia, Max Delia and Victoria Delia. Michael is also survived by three siblings: Anthony Delia and his wife Barbera, CT; George Delia, CT, and Judy Cashill, NJ. To sum up Michael's life: He was a hard worker who loved his work. He was quick to make friends, and enjoyed many enduring life-long friendships. He loved his family dearly, and always welcomed parties, gatherings and celebrations among family and friends. The Delia family wishes to thank the Daniel Island Rescue Squad for their wonderful support in their time of need. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Michael A. Delia are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM Friday, November 9, 2012, at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. The Rite of Committal will be at Magnolia Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening between 5:00 and 7:00 PM at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy. Memorial contributions may be made to Charleston County Volunteer Rescue Squad 2521 Rescue Road N. Charleston, SC 29455 or or any local volunteer rescue squad of your choice. Shocked
for the bad news.
I am sure he is resting in peace since now: he was so nice with everybody.
Even if I stayed with him for a short time I
remember his jokes, his humor and his joy. I think he could find the good side in every person and in every situation.
His family has been
lucky to have him!
He was a great person, I will remember him in my heart and in my prayers.
Reading his obituary, I noticed how many great
things he did!
I am proud of him and of having known him personally!
Sincere condolences and a big embrace to his wife Angela and to all
his great family!
And thanks for what he did for me.

My Dear Angela,
I had to come back and make a copy of Michael's accomplishments. It was a true testimony to the remarkable achievements Michael strove for. He left a vast and rich legacy. I know his focus was his family and he would not have had the strength without you. Now he leaves a beautiful family with you and will be remembered always. I think of him often, about what a sweet soul he was.
Love,
Ginger

I will cherish the memories of a life well lived forever. And there are so many memories. The latest guest book entry vividly reminded me of Grandpop's wry sense of humor. He could always get 'the last word' with his quiet, signature eye twitching retorts –– a la Chief Inspector Dreyfus (ref: Pink Panther movies). I would always chuckle at these perfectly timed (and loving) gestures aimed primarily at family. I am smiling now...

November 12, 2012

Grandpop was 'grand' in every way: from his legendary parties, his bottomless generosity, his demanding goals, to his mischievous jokes and even his barely decipherable emotionally-charged speakerphone conversations. When grandma and grandpop moved to SC, we made it a fast family tradition to head down every year for the Spoleto festival in May. It is hard to explain, but through grandpop and the magic of Charleston, an experience was created that feels more like a holiday than just a vacation. We had epic adventures, saw amazing shows, and ate way too much of the best food and wine, all orchestrated by grandpop. He was a hospitable entertainer, and generous with family and friends--old and new, to the very end. I hope I can show that same generosity in my own life. He set the best example of feeling joy vicariously through those of us he loved. When he was making other people happy, he was happy and you could see it in his grin.

I am going to miss grandpop so much; his laugh, enthusiasm, his banter with grandma, and endless support and drive. He taught us all the moves, so let's open the wine and keep dancing. We love you gramps.

Even if not completely unexpected, the sad news about Mike has shocked me.

In the past months, I had disturbed several times Angela in order to learn about Mike's conditions, and was aware of the progressive worsening of Mike's situation.

We shall miss him a lot.

Mike has been a great mentor, a sincere friend, a generous host more than 30 years long, and the privilege of his friendship has marked me for life.

My thoughts are with Angela, and with all the members of the beautiful Delia Family.

Please convey my most heartfelt condolences to Angela and to all Mike's children.

Thanks again, my friend

Dear Ed and Family,

I am saddened to learn of the loss of your father. His obituary tells of a remarkable man who made a difference at every stage of his life. Knowing you, I am quite certain that his family was his proudest accomplishment.

I am sure he will be greatly missed. We pass through this world on a journey to our final destination in Heaven where all pain and tears are washed away and are replaced with rejoicing in the presence of God.

Eternal rest grant unto him oh Lord. May his soul rest in peace. You and you family are in my prayers that you be comforted in this most difficult time.

With Deepest Condolences,

I am very sorry to hear about the passing away of Michael. I have very fond memories of him, he was a real professional in everything he did. He was a visionary that built a good foundation for a business that will continue to strive for many years in the future. I certainly enjoyed working with him and the entire Delia team. I also must say that he and your company and the magnificent campaign that you led, especially during our start up in the US, helped position us as a leader in our industry.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family in these difficult times. We will certainly miss this very fine gentleman that left his marks on many of us.

Our deepest sympathy and may the good Lord have mercy on Michael's soul.

Dear Angela and Family,

Condolences on the loss of Michael, a one-of-a-kind individualist who was an inspiration to me and to many others. More than 40 years ago, when we were both starting out in business, I remember sharing life goals with him at your home in Maplewood, NJ. "I just want to build something that will endure after I'm gone," he told me. It's clear that he succeeded admirably. God rest you, Michael.

To everyone:

My grandfather will walk with me on every mountain I climb, and be with me in the air I breathe. He will be with me on every crazy adventure I have. I will miss him everyday, though I am so glad i got to know him all of my life and as an adult as well. He has supported me in everything I do and will continue to in my heart. The highest mountain in the Rockies is right under heaven, thats where I will be next to you again. I love and miss you very much grandpa.

Dear Angela, Carol, Gary, Mike and Ed:

I am very sorry to hear of Mike's passing. Mike was always a good friend, a true professional to work with and he loved his family more than anything, but the best thing I will remember about Mike is how much fun it was to be in his company. The more laborious the task, the more fun we had doing it. It has been a number of years since I have seen Mike, but any time his name is mentioned among my old W&P friends a smile comes to my face.

To All:

Mike was my best friend, he was a coach to me, a mentor, a bosss, a partner, a business associate and most important my dad. He was my hero, he was my inspiration and my perspiration. Mike was a perfectionist. Whether it was my hgih school and college buddies eating his french toast or a banquet, a business party, a family outing, pig roast or even a holiday party he always wanted everyone to leave with full bellies and smiles on their faces.
As a result of Mike's kindness and generosity towards his guests, the phrase was coined "Party at the Delia's." Mike was one of the most charitable individuals. He was a leader to his shipmates, his friends, his employees, his family and everyone he touched in his life.
Mike was a very spiritual man, with a strong faith in his God and his savior Jesus Christ. Mike was a hardworking, selfless man who gave far more than he recieved. His happiest moments that I can remember, were the looks on our faces and the faces of those who recieved any of his gifts.
I will miss his sense of humor and that boyish grin. I will miss his talent to solve problems, his persistance and how he never gave up. I will miss our conversations. I will miss our chess games, even though I couldn't beat him. I will miss his hugs, I will miss his smiles, his fiery passion and most of all his love as a father. I will miss watching comedy with him. I will miss his witt, his charm and his smile. I will miss our talks about sports and politics.
I will miss you dad, you will always be in my thoughts. Your loving son Gary.

To Mike's Family.
I was saddened to learn that Mike has passed on. Memories of the many years we worked together came back. His astute advice on how to present Werner & Pfleiderer Corperation to the industry and our customers through different venues contributed to the success of our company. Mike gained the respect of our employees and we all remember him as an organizer of our unmatched social events.
Our thoughts are with you all.

I will remember Mr. Delia as an intelligent, generous, hard working and caring man. He was extremely proud of the accomplishments of his wife, children and grandchildren. He threw the best parties and made sure everyone had a great time even the kids. There was nothing better than getting the word, “Party at Delia's”.

Mr. Delia could also “bust chops” like no one else, how he made us all howl with laughter even if you were on the butt end of it, of which we all found ourselves at one time or another. We will all miss you Mr. Delia. I know Mr. Delia is smiling down upon his family and friends. God Bless You

To the entire Delia Family,
How lucky we've all been to have known and loved Michael. He was a great man, whose humor and wit and guidance shaped all our lives. I'll never forget the late night talks with him over what the world had to offer us all with hard work. I also remember some really funny times as Gary and I "helped" plant trees around the NJ property, of course as well with guidance from Uncle George...but I'll never forget his strength and love of family above all else...It is a vision that I hold in my minds eye forever and hope to pass onto my 2 little ones. We love you all,

If you look up the word rock and scroll down to the fifth or sixth definition, you will find; rock, used in similes and metaphors to refer to someone or something that is extremely strong, reliable or hard. My Dad was my rock. He was solid, dependable and always there for me to offer advice, to listen, to help. He was a safe harbor in rough seas. He was a guiding force in my life.

I love you Dad. I will miss you so very much. Rest peacefully my dear, dear father.

Dear Mrs. Delia and family,
I remember the day I met Mr. Delia, almost 9 years ago. It was the beginning of a wonderful journey with an extra-special man! It was an honor to work for him and he taught me two important things: live life to the fullest and always stand up for what you believe in. I will miss him so much!

i will always remember the feeling of going to my grandparents' house, both in new jersey and south carolina. as a child, it was a simpler excitement of days spent at the pool, outdoors, with ice cream, and watching movies with no discernible bedtime. as an adult, it was also for these reasons, but with a growing understanding of my grandfather, the man who had created this environment. he was always working and improving the world around him- not for himself, but for those he cared about and loved. he was happiest when we were happiest. i always loved my grandfather, and now i am beginning to see the depth of what he gave to his family and to his grandchildren. tremendously generous and never satisfied, he will be profoundly missed.

Dear Angela and family,
Thank you for sharing with us Mike's story. I was not surprised to read what an truly great man he was. Though I didn't know Mike too long, It was such fun hanging around with him while he served as the "sommelier" at your legendary Women Who Wine party. Though he will be missed, no doubt Mike is being held in "the palm of His hand". May he rest in peace.

Hey Grandma and Grandpa,
I just want you both to know I love you both so much and I am so proud to be your Grandson. Grandpa, there is no way for me to show you how sorry I am for not making it there to see you and how much I appreciate what you did to help me get accepted to the Citadel, that was the biggest step in my life and you helped me take it. I look back and I am extremely grateful for all the good memories I have with you and Grandma and all that you both have done for me throughout my life. I hate to see you leave us Grandpa but I know you are watching our whole family from a much better place. I love that I was able to spend time with you in your last few days, which is what makes me happy most.
We will all miss you and remember you always,

If there was one thing that Mike Delia taught me during the long time I knew him, it would be to challenge your fears — don't be afraid of them. Fears are not there to scare you, they are a reminder that something is really worth it. Case in point: the few times in my life when anxiety about what to do with ‘my career' seemed intolerable (ask Carol). And early on, Mike was there to suggest the unthinkable. Why not leave the seemingly predictable world that I was not happen with, and go to work for him? To a twenty-five year old, newly-minted engineer with two small kids, that decision was like jumping off a cliff. And I did. That was not at all easy — emotions ran the gamut, but I enjoyed every minute of what followed. Mike, you were my mentor, my father-in-law, a super grand-pop to all the grand children, and one heck of a special person to me. I will miss you very, very much.
