Melissa Sutton Obituary

Melissa Sutton CHESAPEAKE, VA - Loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Melissa Rowe Sutton, 84, of Chesapeake, VA, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2024. Melissa was born on June 15, 1939, to William and Grace Lee Rowe in Newport News, VA. She grew up in Gloucester, VA, where she enjoyed swimming, water skiing, and crabbing off the docks. She was a spirited soul who loved cheering for the Gloucester High School football team and exploring the York and Ware Rivers. After graduating from Gloucester High School in 1957, she attended Longwood College, where she earned a degree in Home Economics. She was a proud member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority, where she served as president and formed lifelong friendships. She was a loyal alumna who attended many reunions and supported the college. Melissa met the love of her life, V.C. Sutton, Jr., in high school; he was the captain of the football team, and she was the head cheerleader. They married in 1962. Melissa was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who always put her family first. She was a generous and caring person who took care of old and young alike. She was always ready to lend a hand, a hug, or a smile to anyone in need. Melissa had many hobbies and interests that enriched her life and the lives of others. She was an avid baker, a skilled needle pointer creating numerous works of art, a voracious reader, and a strong, proud alto in numerous church choirs. She was passionate about volunteering, serving as a garden guide at Middleton Place, and as a docent for the Historic Charleston Foundation, where she was selected as the docent of the year in 2013. Melissa was preceded in death by her parents, William and Grace Lee Rowe; and her sister, Mary Lee Rowe. She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, V.C. Sutton, Jr.; her children, William "Bill" (Elizabeth), Melissa Weber (Ron), John (Pooh), and Scott (Linda); along with her thirteen grandchildren, their spouses, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. A visitation will be held at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel on Friday night, May 3, 2024, from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. A celebration of Melissa's life will be held on Monday, May 6, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Great Bridge United Methodist Church, Chesapeake, VA, followed by a reception in the fellowship hall. Interment will follow at 3:00 PM on May 6, 2024, at the cemetery at Bethany United Methodist Church, Gloucester Point, VA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the music ministry at Great Bridge United Methodist Church (201 Stadium Drive, Chesapeake, VA 23322) or the Sentara Foundation (1300 Sentara Park, 1st Floor, Virginia Beach, VA 23464). The family would like to thank the medical staff of Sentara Leigh Hospital, especially the nursing staff on 2nd floor east, for their compassionate care and support. Melissa will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. She was a bright and beautiful soul who touched many lives with her kindness and grace. She left a legacy of love, faith, and joy that will live on in the hearts of her family and friends. Visit our guestbook at legacy.com/obituaries/charleston

Bill
Just wanted to remember your Mom this week. Wondering ing how your Dad is doing. My sister Ann who is younger by several years and has dementia. She lives with her husband in an assisted livening home in Delaware. She has just spend a week with me and I can see a great change since I last saw her. It is so sad. Please give my regards to your Dad. Ward has been gone since 2007. We had wonderful times with your parents. Best to you and your family.
Blessings

I knew Melissa, VC, and family from Grest Brjdge Swim and Racquet Club. They were one of my favorite families there and in the community. I visited her recently and reminisced with her and VC. Melissa will be missed by many and I am honored that she was part of my life for a long time. Prayers for her kids and VC.

VC and family, Ellen Clark here in Charleston, so very sad to learn of your wonderful Melissa's passing. My years with Historic Charleston were blessed with sharing time beside great folks like you two and the many docents and friends during those years.
Time may move along, but the pleasure of knowing good friends like the Suttons does not dim the memories . God's grace and His loving arms give you each peace, knowing Melissa will be with you again in his Heaven, Fond memories to each, Ellen Clark

Bill
I was so sorry to hear about Melssa´. Since they moved to Chesapeake we haven´t corresponded but Connie has kept me informed, I would like to make a donation in her memory to the Ministry of Music to her Church since that was her passion as is mine. Hope all is well with your family.
Best Regards

To Melissa's family - I taught at Great Bridge High School with Melissa and then I transferred to Hickory High School. Then our paths crossed again in the Four Flags DAR chapter...and we also sang alto together in the community performance of Handel's Messiah. So I have many fond memories of Melissa. My heartfelt sympathy--

We appreciate all the support that was given us as we opened our first Texaco Express Lube. Your support for Bethany was continuing and very appreciated. A special place in heaven is reserved! I lived in the neighborhood with Melissa and was a Middleton Place docent with her for many years. She was a dedicated volunteer and always a friendly and cheerful person. Peace and Blessings.

I met Melissa at the Summerville YMCA aerobics class in 1999. She and the other "back row" ladies were so much fun! They showed up once in tutus, leotards and pearls to prove that Southern ladies could get their sweat on! Melissa encouraged me to become a volunteer at her beloved Middleton Place where I have been since 2005. It's only thanks to her insistence that I looked into it and now I have been an employee of Middleton Place since 2011. She was a wonderful friend and I was so sad when she moved back to Virginia with VC (also a great friend.) I know she was the backbone of your family and I am so sorry for your loss.

My time knowing Melissa at the Vero was short but she made such an impression on my brother Don and me. I will remember the grace and kindness she extended to all. She and I shared often talked about our love of music, singing in the choir and faith in the Lord. Our deepest condolences to VC and all the family.
