Maxwell Griffith Obituary

Maxwell Ross Griffith Charleston - Maxwell Ross Griffith died on August 9, 2019 after a brief illness, surrounded by family. Ross was born in Charleston on November 9, 1955. He grew up in the city with the "Gadsden Street Gang", and could always be seen on a bike or in a boat, accompanied by his sidekick and beloved dog Pepper. Ross attended The Watt School, Porter-Gaud School and the High School of Charleston. He graduated from the University of South Carolina. He worked as a yacht broker, in sales and was a realtor. Ross was an accomplished sailor. He was a recipient of the Philip O'Neill Hanvey Memorial trophy, an honor he cherished. While at the University of South Carolina he was selected for the 1976-77 Intercollegiate All-American Sailing Team and was the first All-American sailor from (SAISA), the South Atlantic Region. He also served as a founding board member of the J. Stewart Walker, Jr. Endowment Fund, established in 1983 after the death of his dear friend in a sailing accident. He was a member of the Carolina Yacht Club. Ross was a spirited and passionate man. He loved music, kiteboarding on Sullivan's Island, BMW's, and a good joke. But most of all, he loved his children. He was courageous until the end. Fair winds and following seas, Ross. Charleston, again, has lost one of its own. Ross was predeceased by his parents, Frederick Maxwell Griffith and Joan Kable Griffith of Charleston. He was formerly married to Carolyn Simmons Griffith, and is survived by her and two children, Charlton Ross Griffith and Elizabeth Simmons Griffith, all of Charleston. He is also survived by his two sisters, Amanda E. Griffith, of Charleston, and Jorie Griffith Fallon of Sturbridge, MA, and nieces Marjorie G. Herbert and Virginia P. Herbert and nephew Peter Fallon. The relatives and friends of Ross Griffith are invited to attend his Funeral Service at 4 O'Clock Thursday, August 15, at the graveside, St. Philip's Churchyard. Online condolences may be offered at www.CharlestonFunerals.com. In Ross's memory, memorials may be made to The J. Stewart Walker, Jr. Endowment Fund through the College of Charleston Foundation, 66 George Street, Charleston, SC 29424, or to the charity of one's own choice. Arrangements by JAMES A. I am at a total loss for words. I just stumbled upon the news. I worked with Ross on Hilton Head Island. We became very close. I moved to CA in 1994 and we stayed in touch. He even came to visit me in 2007. I have so many found memories of him which I will hold dear to my heart. My condolences to his children Charlton & Biz who he adored. May you rest in peace my dear friend.

My condolences to Ross' family and friends. Our mothers car-pooled us to Porter-Gaud, and we were at Carolina together. I have an image in my mind of Ross skateboarding down the Russell House tamp, long blond hair flowing over his back, and his arms - one in a cast from a skateboarding incident - poised for balance. Our friendship was not always smooth, but endured nevertheless.
Enjoy your eternal ride, Ross, and save a place for me at the break.

Ross was a legend in the sailing community when I was coming up. It seemed every summer regatta the question wasn't if Ross would win the E-scow fleet but by how much. After racing competitively against each other in CORA, I was able to get to know him on a more personal level culminating last summer on Robbys E with Biz and Oliver at CYC. Im so happy he got out there one last time, and the fact I got to share it with him is something Ill always cherish.

Heres hoping Ill have half as many stories and laughs as Ross had.

I will forever think of Ross with a golden tan, breeze stirring his blond hair, his hand steady on the tiller, eyes gazing upon his sail, as his course was set. He was an incredible sailor, and a determined opponent during our youthful days sailing at the Carolina Yacht Club. His smile captured everyone's heart. Joe, Lawson and I send heartfelt sympathy and love to Carolyn, Charlton and Biz. Sail on Ross!

I first knew Ross way back when we both sailed Bluejays at the local regattas. He was just a young boy crewing for his father, Max, who not only taught him how to sail, but how to win. They were rarely denied the first place trophy. I watched in awe as Ross continued to hone his skills through college and became a sailor with very few peers.

Immediately after college, Ross and I worked together for several years at Charleston Yacht Sales, where the close similarity of our names confused more than a few of our customers. That association probably led many people to believe I was a better sailor than I actually was. Over that span and beyond, we spent considerable time sailing together and against each other, and I learned much from him as a result.

Ross was always kind, friendly and approachable for those of us who did not share his natural sailing ability. He was always willing and happy to mentor others. To me, it seemed that Ross was everyones friend. Certainly, for me he was. I last spoke with him on his birthday this past year. Though I had seen him very little since I left Charleston 19 years ago, he was just as gracious as he always was. Nothing had changed.

These memories of Ross I will always cherish. My life is richer for those times with him, the best years of my life, and I will miss him. May you rest in peace, Ross.

My condolences to Ross' family and friends.
He was one of my first friends, having known him since first grade at Watt school.
Many a fun night for sleepovers at his house and sailing with him when we were kids.
I accidently ran into him making rounds at Roper hospital a year or so ago, and had a lovely long talk reminiscing about our youth.

Carolyn, I am at a loss for words; please accept my condolences. In so many ways, Ross typified what it meant to be native Charlestonian. From being a great guy to be around, a great friend & a great sailor, he always gave 110%, which his how much he cared about you & the kids. I will always remember Ross as a true friend & will miss him tremendously. My thoughts are with you. With deepest sympathy, Norman
