Max Crosby Obituary

Max Grant Crosby CHARLESTON - Entered into eternal rest on the evening of September 4, 2009, Max Grant Crosby, husband of Jacqueline McMillan Crosby of Charleston, South Carolina. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at eleven o'clock, Tuesday, September 8, 2009 in Grace United Methodist Church with burial in Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Stuhr's West Ashley Chapel, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway, this Monday evening from six until eight o'clock. Mr. Crosby, 65, founder and CEO, of Max G. Crosby Construction Company, was born on August 30, 1944 in Charleston, South Carolina. Son of the late Lee Grant Crosby and late Ruth Hutto Crosby. His company has built over one hundred and fifty homes throughout Charleston during the last 35 years. Many of the custom homes can be seen in Hickory Hill, Shadow Moss, Coosaw Creek, Dunes West , and Daniel Island neighborhoods. He was a partner in the Tidewater Group, LLC, a commercial development company, CHM Development Group, and andyswebtools.com. Southern Living selected Max G. Crosby Construction as a charter member of its Custom Builder Program in 1993, a privilege offered to only 100 carefully selected builders each year. He served as member of Southern Living Custom Home Program board since 1994. The company built the 2006 Southern Living Idea House on Daniel Island. Company President Jamison Howard said that "Max always approached building a home like he was going to live in the house. He always thought in terms of doing what is right for the customer and that set the stage for the company's success." Since 1977, Max Crosby served many organizations, including the Master Custom Building Council and Charleston Trident Builders Association, where he was Builder of the Year in 1994. The Company was recognized earlier this year by Charleston Home + Design as one of Charleston's "2009 Most influential Architects, Builders and Interior Designers." Max is also Past Master of Olde Charles Town Masonic Lodge #405, and the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce where he was a recipient of the Trident Outstanding Performance Award. At Grace United Methodist Church, Max has served as Chairman of the Trustees, as a member of the staff-parish relations committee, the finance committee, and the long-range planning committee. Max was a veteran of the United States Army and had served in Germany. Surviving are his wife of 43 years Jacqueline McMillan Crosby, a daughter Jocelyn (Scott) Cunningham of Charleston, SC; a son Scott (Jennifer) Crosby of Charleston, SC; a brother Wayne (Sandra) Crosby of Mt. Pleasant, SC; four sisters, Barbara (Bill) Austin, Nancy Singletary, Cheryl (Bill) Stello of Charleston, SC and Robin (Chuck) Coffey of Hillsborough, NC; a granddaughter Jessica Cunningham and grandson Michael Johnson-Crosby both of Charleston, SC; he also leaves behind many nephews, nieces, other relatives, many friends and his beloved Labrador, Elvis. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 1601 Sam Rittenberg Blvd., Charleston, SC 29407. We extend heartfelt sympathy to Jackie and all the family on the loss of Max. We were fortunate to live in four different homes he built and valued his craft as well as his friendship. He was a good friend to us. We have great memories of his music and happy days at Folly Beach.
God be with you all.

Uncle Max always made sure Jocelyn and I spent as much time together as possible when we visited SC from Florida. He kept us entertained with singing Elvis songs or taking us out to dinner, movies, etc. I had a blast when I stayed with them. Uncle Max was a very caring man, as he showed me on many occassions. I will miss him. Aunt Jackie, Jocelyn, and Scott, I love you and will be praying for comfort for all of you.

I will always remember Max as the man who taught me how to dance the Shag. He pulled me out into the living room and started moving and I had no choice but to follow! At the time I was a teenager and thought he was the most handsome man I'd ever seen. Many, many good memories flooded over me when I heard the news of Max's passing. I'm so sorry, Jackie, please know I'm thinking of you during this difficult time.

i grew up with the Crosby family in the 1950's and 1960's off Cosgrove Avenue. We were young children and i remember Max as a very kind young person who everyone liked. he had a great sense of humor. i am sure over the years he still had a kindness about him and will be greatly missed by family and friends. i wish to extend my condolences to his wife, children and siblings. Nancy and i were school friends and i know she will greatly miss him too. May God Wrap His Arms around the family with the loss of Wayne.
