Maurice Nussbaum Obituary

Maurice B. Nussbaum CHARLESTON - Maurice B. Nussbaum died on July 13, 2013, at the age of 84. Maurice, known by friends and family as Nub, was born in Ehrhardt, South Carolina on November 21, 1928, the youngest of four children, son of Lena & Israel Nussbaum. He graduated as Valedictorian from Ehrhardt High School and with honors from The Citadel. He served as Cadet Captain and Company Commander and graduated with a degree in Business Administration in 1949. Maurice served in the Army and retired from the Army Reserves as a Lt. Colonel. He began his 45-year career in the men's clothing business in 1950. Along with his brother-in-law and father-in-law, he owned and operated Jack Krawcheck, a men's clothing store on King Street with branch locations for many years in the Pinehaven Shopping Center and Northwoods Mall. He was an active and long-time member of the Sertoma Club, KKBE Synagogue & Brotherhood, and a lifetime member of the Hebrew Benevolent Society. He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Claire Krawcheck Nussbaum, and is survived by four children, Alan Nussbaum (Neda), Jane Douglas (John), Susie Rieder (Jeff) and Amy Kronsberg (Edward), thirteen grandchildren: Rachel Nussbaum (Noam Pianko), Daniel Nussbaum (Allison), Nathan Nussbaum (Jaclyn Cohen), Joseph Nussbaum (Victoria Neiman), Jacob Nussbaum, Elisheva Shanes (Joshua), Benjamin Douglas, David Rieder, Michael Rieder, and Brian Rieder, and Elliot Kronsberg, Zachary Kronsberg, and William Kronsberg, eight great-grandchildren, and a sister, Rae Addlestone Denemark. Maurice will be remembered for his charming sense of humor, devotion to his family, and integrity in his business. "The Store," Jack Krawcheck, was a gathering place for customers who became friends and was a source of great pride and joy for him. He played a significant role at every stage in the lives of his children and grandchildren. In health and illness, he and Claire were essential and strong anchors for their large and still-growing family. The Nussbaum family wishes to express deep appreciation for the efforts of his three special caregivers who worked with both Maurice and Claire for much of the last year. Funeral services will be held at KKBE Cemetery, Huguenin Avenue, Charleston, SC on Monday, July 15, 2013 at 10:00 am. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Rabbinic Chair Endowment Fund at Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim, 90 Hasell Street, Charleston SC 29401 or to the Trident Literacy Association, 5416-B Rivers Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29406.
