Maurice Hill Obituary

Dr. Maurice R. Hill. age 88, of Edwardsville, died on Friday, Oct. 12, 2007. at his home.

Dr. Hill was born on June 4, 1919, in Granite City, the son of Rolland and Cecelia Lux Hill, who preceded him in death.

He married Rita V. Kelahan Hill in 1942, at St. Theresa Church, in St. Louis. She preceded him in death.

Dr. Hill is survived by 13 children: M. Joseph, and wife Penelope, Hill, of Edwardsville, Maureen E, and husband Gordon, Levine, of Chicago, Dr. M. Robert, and wife Dotty, Hill of Des Peres, Mo., Thomas A., and wife Bonnie, Hill of Highland, Rita M., and husband E.J., Schwager, of Waterloo, Dr. James R. , and wife Diane, Hill, of Collinsville, Edward P., and wife Kathy, Hill, of Pueblo, Colo., David M., and wife Kris, Hill, of Edwardsville, Dr. Jean, and husband, Dr. John, Schad, of of Shiloh, Judith A. Hill and friend James Hembrough, of Maryville, Christopher P., and wife Kay, Hill, of Edwardsville, Dr. Gregory A, and wife Barb, Hill, of Creve Coeur, Mo., Barbara M., and husband Dr. Roger, Yusen, of Webster Groves, Mo.; 39 grandchildren, and 22 great grandchildren, two brothers: Marvin Joseph, and wife Gen, Hill, and Dr. Robert. S., and wife Annabelle, Hill, both of Edwardsville.

He is preceded by his wife, parents, a sister: Eileen Watt (husband Bob), daughter-in-law: Penelope A. Thatcher Hill, and a grandson: Gregory J. Hill.

Dr. Hill attended Webster Elementary School and Granite City Community High School. He also attended St. Louis University undergraduate school and St. Louis University School of Dentistry, where he graduated in 1943. Dr. Hill was a captain in the U.S. Army during WWII, and served at dentist field hospitals in Europe. In 1949, he moved his family to Edwardsville, where he started his dental practice. He retired from dentistry in 1992. He served as a past president of the Madison District Dental Society.

Dr. Hill was a long-time member of St. Boniface Parish, in Edwardsville, the Knights of Columbus, and enjoyed gardening, baseball, bowling, horseracing and fly fishing.

Visitation will be conducted on Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Irwin Chapel in Glen Carbon.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Edwardsville, on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 10 a.m., with Father Jeff Goeckner as celebrant.

Interment will be at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville.

Memorials may be made to St. Boniface School or to masses.
