Maud Cox Obituary

Maud Cox CHARLESTON - Maud Daverio Cox, born July 3, 1931, died peacefully surrounded by family in Buenos Aires, Argentina on December 1, 2023. An advocate for human rights, an accomplished author and professor, she earned her doctorate in Comparative Literature from The University of SC and taught both French and Spanish at The University of Charleston. She was a lover of music, history, and art and could often be found at the kitchen table hosting family and friends and guiding deep discussions surrounding politics, life, and world peace. She and her beloved husband of 62 years, Bob Cox, and the former editor of The Buenos Aires Herald, fought side by side for all human rights and especially during the hardest moments in Argentine history. The military dictatorship, the "Dirty War" forced the family into exile and thus the family came to work, study, and live in South Carolina. Charleston became the family's new home. Bob Cox worked at The Post and Courier, the four children went to school, and Maud began her academic adventure. Maud's children and their wives and grandchildren describe her as " A born leader, one who showed what it meant to be a strong and powerful woman. She was the glue that kept us all together. She did exceptional things for human kind but her priority was always her family. She will always be remembered for the beauty she brought to the universe." She was dearly loved by her children- Robert Andrew Cox, Victoria Cox, David (Maria) Cox, Peter (Elizabeth) Cox, and Ruth Cox (Joe Dobson) as well as her grandchildren- Tomas, James, Sofia, Julia, and Augustin.

A remarkable woman, partner in a remarkable couple. We only met Maud in Buenos Aires in recent years at the presentation of one or her books at the Argentine National Library. She played a key role in trying to save lives during the Dirty War 1976-83, for which Bob's also courageous leadership of The Buenos Aires Herald has been documented.

Maud was my professor in a French and Spanish Literature in Translation class at the College of Charleston. It was one of my more memorable classes for which I still have a great appreciation. My condolences to the family and everyone who knew her.
