Mary Wells Obituary

Mary Isabel Boulware Wells COLUMBIA, SC - Mary Isabel Boulware Wells, 87, of Columbia, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 20, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. A Celebration of Life for Mrs. Wells will be held on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church, 1005 Asbury Drive, Columbia SC. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Mrs. Wells was born in Winnsboro, South Carolina, on August 9, 1937, and was the oldest child of the late Carrie Banks Boulware and Charlie Mack Boulware. While attending Monticello High School, Mrs. Wells excelled in her academics and was a member of the Girls Basketball team and many school clubs. After her high school graduation, Mrs. Wells graduated from Columbia Commercial College in 1956. She was an active member of Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church and was involved in the United Methodist Women and the Bauknight Sunday School Class. She was an avid fan and supporter of the University of South Carolina athletics having been a member of the Gamecock Club for many years and attended countless football, women's and men's basketball, baseball, and softball games with her husband, George, and grandchildren, Corey and Julie. Mrs. Wells was a South Carolina State employee in the Department of Mental Health working at the G. Werber Bryan Psychiatric Hospital and retiring from Morris Village Alcohol and Drug Treatment Center. After retirement, she enjoyed playing bridge, being part of the garden club, and spending time with her friends and family. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the South Carolina Retirement System. Mrs. Wells is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Pamela Wells Cain (John) of Lexington, SC, and Paula Wells Renaker (David) of Lexington, SC; two grandchildren, Corey Samuel Renaker of Irmo, SC, and Julie Elizabeth Renaker of Charleston, SC; a sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn Boulware Sanders (Jimmy) of Seneca, SC; a brother and sister-in-law, Samuel "Mack" Boulware (Becky) of Salisbury, NC; and cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, George William Wells; her parents; her sister, Sara Ann Fogle; and her brother, Charles Thomas "Tom" Boulware. The family thanks and appreciates the staff at Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community in the Independent Living, Rose Garden Memory Care, and Skilled Nursing Care communities along with the staff of Prisma Hospice Care for their endless support and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church, 1005 Asbury Drive Columbia, SC 29209 or Prisma Health Hospice - Midlands.
