Mary Miller Obituary

Mary Ellen Rourk Miller N. CHARLESTON - Mary R. "Mickey" Miller, 83, of North Charleston, a true and faithful servant of the Lord Jesus Christ, was called Home to be with her Redeemer on May 3, 2017. Mickey, as she was known to all, was born on March 30, 1934, the eldest daughter of the late Elmore L. Rourk, Sr. and Marie G. Ferira Rourk. Mickey was a loving and devoted wife of 47 years to the late Bruce H. Miller, until his passing in 2004. She attended Chicora High School and was a lifelong member of Cherokee Place United Methodist Church. Mickey began her working career as a bookkeeper with Poplin's Piggly Wiggly. She served as Administrator for Charleston County Voters Registration, retiring in May 2000 with 22 years of service. Mickey also served 39 years as a Commissioner for the North Charleston Public Service District, served on the B.C.D. Council of Governments Board of Directors for 20 years, and was a member of the North Charleston Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. As a testament to Mickey's lasting legacy of public service, leadership, and community involvement, she was awarded The Order of the Silver Crescent from Gov. Jim Hodges. Mary is survived by 3 children: Cynthia M. Berezny, Robert B. Miller (Gail), and Ronald A. Miller; 6 grandchildren: Jeremy Miller, Joshua Berezny (Diana), Matthew Miller, Rebecca Powell, Summer and Skyler Miller; 5 great-grandchildren: Niko, Ralf, Samantha, Dean, and Ryan Berezny. Also survived by her sister Donna Spell (Lonnie) and brothers Elmore "Sonny" Rourk, Jr. (Patsy), Joseph "Buddy" Rourk, and Ronnie Rourk (Mary); along with an extended family she dearly loved. I lived across the street from Mickie and Bruce for many years. She always teased me about cutting my own hair and going to bed with the chickens. (I had young children at the time and had to get them in bed early.) She was such a nice lady. One in a million. RIP Mickie.

There will always be a light in my heart for my "outlaw" as we affectionetly teased each other. Her faith, love, and guidance carried me on many dark and lonely days. The strength and prayers she offered in my hours of need will never be forgotten. She would open her home to all, fed all, prayed for all, and loved all no matter what shape you were in or what battles lay ahead. Thank you Meme. Thank you to all of the Miller's and Rourk's that allowed this amazing woman to touch so many lives without feeling slighted for sharing her love. I will miss her dearly.

Aunt Mickey was a special lady, she always had a smile on her face. Remember the talks she had with me about finding my sister - she was always so positive. She will be missed, loved her so much.

I can remember Aunt Mickie when I was very young. She was a special lady. Lost touch over the years but always thought of her. I know she was very happy when Debbie Griffin Fielding and I, Sandra Griffin Warren found each other. Debbie would let me know about her. Love & prayers to all her family.

I fondly recall childhood vacation time in Charleston where Mickey welcomed me with warmth and really made me understand that I was part of the family. Her beautiful smile and great laugh will be missed.

I have many fond memories of Mickey during the time that I worked at Garrett High School. She was a true public servant who gave so much to her community. She will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.
