Mary McDaniel Obituary

Mary Sue Nunn McDaniel SUMMERVILLE - Mary Sue Nunn McDaniel, 81, of Summerville, South Carolina, wife of George W. McDaniel, peacefully entered into eternal rest Sunday, June 9, 2024. She was a beloved mother, wife, family member, friend, and musician. She will be remembered for her devotion to family and friends, not only to her own friends but to those of her two sons, George Hodnett McDaniel and James Nunn McDaniel. Mary Sue was born in Hawkinsville, Georgia, the daughter of Francis and Coralie Nunn, and grew up in Perry, Georgia, going to the public schools there and developing lifelong friends. She graduated from Emory University, earning a BA in education in 1964. Upon graduation, she taught in Atlanta and then worked for Pan American Airways, enabling her to travel worldwide, which she loved. She developed many a story to tell about her and her friends' adventures. Living in Washington, DC, and thanks to Carolinians, Jimmy Guignard and Billy Wingfield, she met the love of her life, George McDaniel, in 1976, whom she married in 1980. During her life, Mary Sue loved people, music, teaching, her church, gardening, and her "critters" - her dogs and cats. Her smile could light up a room. Her laugh was infectious. She was steadfast in her faith, and it showed. She loved stories and hosted a book club for her dear friends in Summerville. For many years she taught at Alston Middle School in Summerville, where her students read not excerpts but entire, award-winning novels, which they loved. Decades later, some still consider "Mrs. McDaniel" their best teacher. She loved music and played the piano with a light touch in concerts in Charleston and Summerville and for the Church of the Good Shepherd in Summerville. Among her favorite composers were Bach, Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin. When she played, the congregation listened. Growing up Methodist, she accompanied her father, who sang and directed the church choir, and played the hymns of Charles Wesley like "Love Divine, All Love Excelling" and "O, For a Thousand Tongues." She valued all the friends of her sons, several of whom considered her their "second mother." Receiving special joy were her grandson, Allen McDaniel, and his mother, Liza Sosnowski Coville. Mary Sue is survived by her loving husband, George W. McDaniel; their two sons, George and James; grandson, Allen McDaniel and his mother, Liza Coville of Charleston; her sister, Marjorie Nunn of Perry; her brother, George Nunn and his wife, Janet, of Perry; brother-in-law, Stuart McDaniel and his wife, Sarah, of Wadmalaw Island; and a host of Nunn/Brown cousins and of McDaniel in-laws, all of whom loved her lively company. The family would like to thank all the wonderful friends from near and far who have voiced their love. The staff and caregivers at the Lowcountry Community Hospice House extended wonderful care. Father Dow Sanderson and members of her Church of the Good Shepherd lived the church's name. Funeral services will be at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 206 Central Ave., Summerville, 29483, at 2 pm, Friday, June 14, with arrangements by Simplicity Lowcountry Cremation and Burial Services. Ladson, SC. Memorials may be made to the Church of the Good Shepherd, 119 West Luke St., Summerville, SC, 29483.

Mary Sue was a good friend and I will miss her. She and Marge were long time members of the "carpool" of Colonial Homes in Atlanta where we commuted to the five points area every day. We had a lot of fun with both. Mary Sue was alive and fun on the way in and Marge was silent. The opposite occurred on the way home. Great girl and great sense of humor. I hope George can take care of himself without her, as she did most of the work at home.

Mary Sue was a dear neighbor and also taught my boys at Alston Middle School. She picked up my son every Friday and took him to school after getting breakfast at a drive thru. She will be missed and was well loved. We hated to miss her funeral.

I am distressed to learn of Mary Sue´s death. We became friends in the late 60´s and traveled to Europe together, having a fun adventure everywhere we went. Mary Sue was full of life and laughter.
She will truly be missed.
My sympathies to the family-especially Marjorie and George.
