Mary Lafaye Obituary

LAFAYE, Mary COLUMBIA - Graveside service for Mary Jamar Bird Lafaye, 94, will be held Monday at 2:30 p.m. in Elmwood Cemetery and Gardens. Canon Joy Cantrell will officiate. The family will receive friends at 1412 Haynesworth Road following the service. DUNBAR FUNERAL HOME, DEVINE STREET CHAPEL, is assisting the family. Mrs. Lafaye, widow of George Eugene Lafaye, Jr., died Thursday, August 21, 2008, at Still Hopes Retirement Community. Born in Savannah, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Angus E. and Cora Jamar Bird. She lived in Athens, Ga. and Macon, Ga. before moving to Charleston, S.C. She graduated from Ashley Hall and the College of Charleston where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta. Mrs. Lafaye was a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral Parish, an emeritus member of the Assembly, a former regent of the Ann Pamela Cunningham Chapter of the DAR, and former member of both the Junior League of Columbia and the Colonial Dames. Mrs. Lafaye is survived by children: George Eugene Lafaye III (Peggy) of Columbia, Angus Bird Lafaye (Cary) of Columbia, Corinne Lafaye Morgan (John) of Charleston, and Mary Lafaye Floyd of Columbia. Mrs. Lafaye leaves grandchildren, John William Morgan IV of Columbia, Perrin Lafaye Roper (Lee) of Greenwood, George Eugene Lafaye IV (Susanne) of Greenville, Thomas Cordes Morgan (Shields) of Charleston, Helen Lafaye Johnson (Duncan) of Columbia, Robert Lafaye Morgan (Jean) of Charleston, Courtney Lafaye Floyd and Catherine Stewart Floyd; great-grandchildren, Wiley Lee Roper III, Angus Stewart Roper, George Bradley Lafaye, and Pope Duncan Johnson V; sister, Kitty Bird Storrs (Thomas) of Charlotte; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Angus Eugene Bird, Jr. The family request that memorials be made to Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community, P.O. Box 2959, West Columbia, SC 29171; Trinity Cathedral Parish (Restoration Project), 1100 Sumter St., Columbia, SC 29201; or to a charity of one's choice.
