Mary King Obituary

Mary Bailey King CHARLESTON - Mary Bailey King entered into eternal rest on June 6, 2013, after her courageous battle with cancer for some twenty-one years. She spent her final days at home surrounded by her family and friends whom she dearly loved. She was the oldest daughter of William Robert and Mary Pinckney Bailey. She was predeceased by her parents and her former husband, Thomas Preston King, Jr. She is survived by her son, Thomas Preston King III (Trey) and her daughter-in-law, Lydia Buxbaum King, and their girls, Alden(13) , Glynn(13), and Bailey(10); her daughter, Anna King Bailes, and her husband John, and their sons, Noah(7), Dylan(5), and Drew(3); her sister, Ann Bailey King; and sister, Trudy Sease and her husband Earl and their family; brother in law Phil King and his wife Ann and their family; brother in law Dr. Kenneth King and his wife Anne and their family. Mary was a devoted grandmother, affectionately called "Bami", and an aunt and great-aunt to children who so loved and admired her. She graduated from James Island High School in 1959 and subsequently Coker College in 1962. Her three decades of teaching Spanish included high schools in Camden, Greenville, and locally at St. Andrews HS, James Island Middle School, Fort Johnson Middle School, and James Island HS. She was a woman of great faith and was an active member of Saint James Church over the course of sixty years, most recently serving on its vestry and being inducted into The Daughters of the King. She traveled on numerous medical mission trips to the Dominican Republic, as well as Honduras, serving as a translator for the teams. She loved teaching Spanish to her grandchildren and volunteering at their schools. She was a passionate Cougar basketball fan, whose exuberant cheers will never be forgotten. She treasured her card games with her dear friends that spanned some forty years and will be remembered for her fierce competitiveness. She enjoyed knitting and loved teaching her granddaughter the art. Her friends and relatives are invited to attend her Funeral Service at 2:00 p.m., Monday, June 10, 2013 in Saint James Church, 1872 Camp Rd, James Island, 29412, with interment in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at a reception in The Ministry Center following the service. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. Anna and Trey, I did not get a chance to meet you yesterday at the funeral, but I want you to know how inspired I was by the service for your mother. She was a wonderful lady and friend. I have known Mary since high school days. She actually helped me with my Spanish when I was at the College of Charleston a long time ago. She has left you all a wonderful, Godly, Christian heritage. May the love and peace of Christ fill your hearts as you grieve her loss.

A mother, a Bami, a friend.... a beautiful lady.

Mary King was a beautiful lady and her presence will be missed tremendously. Her love for her grandchildren was written all over her face. Anna, our heart and prayers are with you and John. We pray you will find comfort in knowing her new home and her restored health is what she lived for. Her faith was so great and so obvious. But her absence will leave a hole and much hurt..... she may physically be gone but her spirit and the memories she gave so many will always be treasured. With all of our love.....

Mrs. King was a special lady- so sweet and kind. I was in the cancer support group with her at St. James. She will be missed. But I know that she is in Heaven with Jesus.

Mary will always hold a special place in my family's heart. We shared lots of fun. She taught us to count in Spanish when we were little, lots of funny sounds, hid candy around the house to find. You couldn't help but be happy when she was around. All my love to Anna, Trey and family.

Mary was a gracious and kind lady. She was an invaluable asset to our diocesan medical mission trips. She will not only be missed by all who served with her on these trips but by the people of the Dominican Republic whose lives she also touched.

Mary was and will remain an inspiration to love and serve The Lord to the end. She spent countless hours in ministry and mission sharing Jesus whether translating for mission trips here and abroad or speaking a kind wise word to those who needed one. We will think of her often as we pray, give and go on missions.

Mary was my cooperating teacher way back in 1979 when I did my student teaching at Fort Johnson High School. It is because of her that I have survived ( and loved) teaching Spanish for all of these years. May God Bless her. Katherine Barry Catterton
