Mary Hughes Obituary

Mary Forsberg Hughes CHARLESTON - Mary Margaret Forsberg Hughes, 63, of James Island, entered into eternal rest on May 4, 2024, after a fierce battle with cancer. Mary was first diagnosed with cancer in 2008. Over the last 16 years, she endured multiple surgeries, several radiation treatments and massive amounts of chemotherapy. She fought endometrial cancer, kidney cancer, a recurrence of endometrial cancer, breast cancer and lastly a recurrence of breast cancer that she fought for the last two years until it finally wore her down. She wouldn't give up. Her doctors finally had to tell her there was nothing left to give her. She entered into hospice on April 17, 2024, and died 17 days later. Mary was born in Charleston, SC, to Charles Alfred and Anne Clair Forsberg on February 15, 1961. She graduated from James Island High School in 1979. She attended the College of Charleston and in 1983 she became the office manager of Forsberg Engineering and Surveying, a company started by her brother, Danny. Mary stayed with Forsberg Engineering for over 40 years, becoming a co-owner when Danny retired. She reluctantly left Forsberg Engineering in November 2023 on Long Term Disability. Mary is predeceased by her husband of 35 years, Douglas Melvin Hughes. Mary is survived by her son, Ryan D. Hughes and his girlfriend, Summer McCall; brothers, Charles Forsberg (Rose) of Chapin, SC, Daniel Forsberg (Maureen), Dennis Forsberg (Ann Marie); sisters, JoAnne Sisnroy (Robert) and Patricia Forbes (Robert Hunt), all of James Island. She leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She is also survived by her mother-in-law, Jackie Hughes. To all her family and friends, we leave you with this. "She's okay and she will be alright." The relatives and friends of Mary F. Hughes are invited to attend her Funeral Service at Noon, Friday, May 10, 2024, at the James A McAlister Chapel, 1620 Savannah Hwy., Charleston. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends between 10:30 and 11:45 AM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Dragon Boat Charleston, 1643 Savannah Hwy., #261, Charleston, SC 29407. Amazing Woman for what she had done for so many years thinking and taking care of others and never releasing the passion and dedication she had for family and those she knew closest. Certainly someone I will never forget. Or the family there as it was one the best parts of my life and many memories of the Forsberg family. Gone but never forgotten. Remember the day when she brought Ryan into the office and the brightness there for her and Douglas and how great it was to see happiness abound. She always put everyone else first and never relenting on how great life was to be a part of everyone else’s life good or bad. The strongest person I ever knew and the greatest experience you can have with someone who is dancing with the Angels and her family (Douglas, Charlie and Company) now. No better place to be and fitting for as great a woman she was. Condolences to Danny and Maureen and family. Certainly the best times are yet to come. Most definitely appreciative of everything she did for me and my family. Those times will never be never be forgotten but cherished like those from all of us.

Dear Forsbergs and Hughes,

Sending you all of my heart as I type this. Mrs. Mary was among the most benevolent and resilient people I've ever met. She and Mr. Danny have always been there with a job for us Coopers when we need it most. Working under Mrs. Mary was such a privilege, and it was a comfort in a trying time in my life. I will never forget our laughs and how she totally respected and encouraged my ideas at Forsberg Engineering & Surveying... I will also never forget her love of Elvis and Krispy Kreme doughnuts.

I'm certain she and Douglas are together again, free from any pain.
Ryan, I hope you know her love for you was outspoken and filled her whole heart. And I hope you know that it will never fade.

What a beautiful life she lived. She is so missed.

My deepest condolences.

Love,
Renée Cooper
