Mary Hanckel Obituary

Mary Anne Sadler Hanckel Charleston - Mary Anne Sadler Hanckel, 79, of Charleston, South Carolina, wife of Richard "Ricky" W. Hanckel III, entered into eternal rest Thursday, July 14, 2022. Her Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, July 19, 2022 in St. Philip's Church, 142 Church Street, at 1:00 p.m. The family will receive guests following the service in the Parish Hall at St. Philip's Church. Interment will be private at a later date. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel. Mary Anne was born October 12, 1942 in Asheville, North Carolina, daughter of the late William Matlock Sadler and Dorothy Murph Sadler. Just a couple of years after her birth, her family returned to her mother's hometown of St. Matthew's, SC, where Mary Anne grew up. She was a proud graduate of the University of South Carolina as well as Tulane University, where she received her Master's degree. After graduating, Mary Anne moved to Charleston to start a career in Speech Therapy with the Charleston Speech and Hearing Clinic. Mary Anne was well-known for her quick wit and her love of Gamecock football and she made many friends in Charleston. She was soon introduced to a local eligible young bachelor named Ricky and the rest, as they say, is history. Once Mary Anne became a mother, she retired from speech therapy to raise her children, which she did with love, faith, and humor. She was a very active member of the community. She co-founded one of the first upscale resale boutiques in Charleston and was docent at the Nathaniel Russell House. Mary Anne was a faithful member of St. Philip's Church, where she served on the ECW, Altar Guild, Flower Guild, and was on staff at the church for many years. She was also an active volunteer with the Junior League of Charleston as well as with Hope Center for the Retarded. Mary Anne was fiercely loyal to all whom she loved as well as to her alma mater and church family. She was an avid reader, a skilled bridge player, and a devoted grandmother. She will be greatly missed. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Ricky; daughter, Dorothy H. Lancaster (Gregg); son, Richard W. Hanckel IV all of Charleston, SC; three grandchildren: Mary Kathryn Lancaster, Anne Hanckel Lancaster and Palmer Gregory Lancaster. Also surviving are sister-in-law, Judy H. Middleton (Philip) and brother-in-law, Chris Hanckel (Margaret) and beloved nieces, nephews, and godchildren. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Dorothy Carolyn Sadler; her sister-in-law, Ellen Hanckel Derks, and an infant son. Memorials may be made to St. Philip's Church, 142 Church Street, Charleston, SC 29401. A memorial message may be sent to the family by visiting our website at www.jhenrystuhr.com. I was so sorry to hear about Mary Anne! Even though it has been a long time since I had seen her, I remember volunteering on committees with her as well as seeing her at Church.

Praying for the family as they mourn the loss of Mary Ann. I worked with her at the Russell House and always enjoyed the time we were together. We also talked a lot about football even though we pulled for different teams. She was a Gamecock through and through.
