Mary Freeman Obituary

Mary Crawford Locke Freeman Mt. Pleasant - Mary Crawford Locke Freeman, 94, widow of Willington Edmondston Freeman, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, passed away on Tuesday, June 22nd, 2021. The relatives and friends of Crawford Freeman are invited to attend her graveside Funeral Service on Saturday, June 26th, 2021 at 2:00 p.m., Christ Episcopal Churchyard. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL. Friends may call at the residence of Berta and Robbie Freeman, 3 Barre Street, Charleston, on Friday June 25th , 2021 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Born in Rodman, S.C. in Lancaster County on August 21, 1926, Crawford was the only child of Robert Cherry Locke and Mary Lillian Hayes. She grew up with her extended Locke family in Rodman and graduated from Oakley Hall High School in 1943 and attended Winthrop College. Her father built bridges throughout the South and her life forever changed in 1945 when she moved to Mt. Pleasant while he was building the Ben Sawyer Bridge. It was there she met the love of her life "Wing" Freeman and they were married in 1947 at St. Andrew's Church. At the time, it was said that many ladies in the Old Village were distraught that one of the Old Village's most eligible bachelors had been swept off his feet by a gorgeous lady from "off". Although her most important job was raising her five children, she began her career with the U.S. Department of Commerce in Charleston and later worked numerous jobs including the American Red Cross, Charleston Office Supply, Collins Office Supply and many retail shops. She was one of the first employee's for Southern Belles Children Shop in Mt. Pleasant, where she spent most of her earnings on outfits and gifts for her grandchildren. Crawford touched the lives of so many with her genuine grace and unconditional love. Her mottos were "Don't worry, be happy" and "Don't sweat the small stuff". Throughout the years, she adored her visits from special friends...too many to mention, but especially Mary Louise, "Margie", Dorothy Anne, Kent, Sara Jo, Ilse, Betty, Ann, Esther, Shelia, Kia, Kerry and Carol. She dearly missed the good times and laughter with longtime friend Mary Adams. Crawford, known by her grandchildren as "Grancie", reveled in family life and adored her ten "GRANDS". She looked forward to the annual summer pilgrimage to Litchfield Beach for "Freeman Beach Week", where she frequently disappeared to go shopping at The Hammock Shops of Pawley's Island. She delighted in showering her family with "surprise" gifts from these shopping adventures. She is survived by her daughters, Mary Freeman Elam (Mark), Ellen Freeman James (Donny) and Carole Ann Freeman Berry (David); sons, John Frampton Freeman II (Leslie), and Robert Locke Freeman (Berta); grandchildren, Will Freeman (Meredith), Anna McDonald (Nicholas), Kate Strickler (Nate), Jadie James (fiance; Mary), Vee Elam, Ross Freeman, Albert Freeman (Nina), Caroline Freeman, Mary Crawford Lawrence (Thomas) and Ellie Baxa (Chris); great-grandchildren, John Robert Strickler, Locke Freeman, Crawford Freeman, Scout Strickler, Millie Strickler, Mills Freeman, Edward Freeman, Aldous McDonald and Georgia Kate Baxa. She was preceded in death by her parents and her loving husband "Wing". Thank you to Durst Family Medicine, who cared for her for over sixty years and all those with Roper Hospice; especially Nurse Theresa. The family requests that memorials be made to St. Andrew's Church, 440 Whilden Street, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464 and Meals on Wheels, 2304 N. Hwy. 17, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29466. My memories of Crawford and Wing are many, vivid in my mind´s eye, and rich in affection. They were both so loving, thoughtful and unflappable. Our families were and are connected by a great many heartstrings and times shared throughout the past 60 years. We laughed, celebrated, and rejoiced in the many great times, including many Christmas mornings together, and we helped one another through the times of disappointment and unimaginable grief that life brought our way. Crawford was always there with her sweet, quiet smile and her funny quips. To know her was to love her. One of my funniest memories occurred when my brother Darrel, who was Mary´s boyfriend in high school, was to dress as a female for some skit or event at school. Our mom was, shall we say, not well "endowed," so Darrel asked Crawford if he could borrow one of her bras! He was much more feminine in appearance, despite his manliness, in Crawford´s bra than he would have been in Mom´s! I believe that there were many waiting for Jesus to bring her to the place He had prepared for her in His father´s house. What a joyous reunion for her with Wing, many family members and lots of very dear friends! I can visualize her now among them, in her new body, free of pain and physical limitations, singing and dancing before the throne of God. Mary and Mark, John and Leslie, Robbie and Berta, Ellen and Donny, Carole Ann and David, on behalf of the Adams family, I assure you that you are all in our thoughts and prayers. You are precious in God´s sight and in ours!

Crawford will always be in my thoughts and prayers. My memories of time with Crawford will remain in my heart, and her genuine love for family and friends will forever be with me. Through Crawford's eyes one could always see her faith and trust in God. Knowing Crawford is truly a blessing beyond measure. With love, Carol Salas
