Mary Derrick Obituary

DERRICK, Mary CHAPIN - Mrs. Derrick passed away on Saturday, April 22, 2006. She was born in Berkeley County, SC, on March 13, 1924. Mrs. Derrick was the widow of William John (Foots) Derrick and the daughter of Betsey Ann McKenzie Brewer and Street Simion Brewer. Her sister Lettie Black and brothers Elbert, Wilburn, Edward, Sears and Harold Brewer predeceased her. Mrs. Derrick graduated from Berkeley High School and received her B.S. in Institutional Management from Winthrop College in 1944. Throughout her life she credited her educational success to the generosity of her siblings. Mrs. Derrick retired in 1991 as a Nutrition Consultant with Home Health Services at South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. Prior to her employment at DHEC, she was the Clinical Dietician at the VA Hospital in Columbia, the School Lunch Manager at Heyward Gibbes School in Columbia, Assistant Dietician/Student Nurse Instructor at Columbia Hospital, Dietician at Baker Sanitarium and St. Frances Hospital in Charleston, SC. Mrs. Derrick was active in the national, state and local Dietic Associations; the Council on Aging Program in Richland and Lexington Counties; the board of the Human Resources Committee of Central Midlands Council of Governments; the Utilization and Review committee of Medical records for Palmetto Health District. Her volunteer activities included: Representative, SC Silver Haired Legislature; Chairman of Credential Committee; Chairman Central Midlands Council of Governments Regional Aging Advisory Comittee; Board Member, Irmo-Chapin Recreation Commission; Meals on Wheels driver; Project Love; Dutch Forkers representative to the Chapin Chamber of Commerce; SC Lutheran Home-Steering Committee to form Shepherd's Center in White Rock, SC; Shepherd's Center Volunteer Director; board member, Program Chairman, Chairman of the Board; Lexington Co. School District 5 - Five Year Strategic Planning Committee and Chapin Elementary Planning Committee; Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church -LCW President, Finance Committee, Stewardship Committee Social Ministry, Music and Worship Committee, Pre-school Committee, and five y ear Strategic Planning Committee; Advisory Board Meals on Wheels, Chairman: SCDHEC Health Style Committee; Advisory Board, SC State Fire Marshall's office; Governor's Task Force to Limit Surveys in Institutional Hunger and Poverty Task Force; Home Health Advisory Council; Advisory Board, Gerontology Chair, USC; SC Commission on Aging; SC White House Conference on Aging, Planning Committee, Program Committee; delegate to SC White House Conference SC Federation of Older Americans, Board Member, Second Vice-President; Chapin Women's Club. During her lifetime Mrs. Derrick received many awards in recognition of her work and her volunteer service. Among them are: Mary Eva Hite Award by the SC Gerontological Society; Chapin Hall of Fame; Outstanding Service award - Home Health Services; Volunteer of the month, Chapin Irmo Recreation Commission; Outstanding Public Health Nutrionist in SC; and SC House of Representative Certificate of Appreciation for work with the elderly. In retirement Mrs. Derrick traveled to nearly every state with her friends and family - finally reaching a life long dream to see Alaska. During her career and in retirement she worked tirelessly on behalf of and as a representative of the senior citizens of South Carolina. Her final volunteer position was Resident Volunteer at Eden Gardens Assisted Living in Columbia. Mrs. Derrick is survived by her daughters, Betsey D. (Wayne) Roberts of Columbia and Carolyn D. Parks of Chapin; grandchildren, Stan Parks III of Florida, Kerry Davenport (Bryan), Brent Roberts (Kerri), and Jessie Roberts of Columbia and Amy P. Simmons (Mark) of Tennessee and Stephen James (Chasity) Parks of Columbia and great-grandchildren, Abby, William, and Ashlyn Davenport, Caleb and Gracyn Roberts, Derrick Parks and Lana Parks. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials are made to WE Care Interfaith Outreach Center, 1808 Chapin Road, Chapin, SC 29036. The family will receive friends at CAUGHMAN-HARMAN FUNERAL HOME in Chapin, SC, Monday, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., April 24, 2006. The service will be held Tuesday, April 25, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Mt.
