Mary Madeline Daly died on December 6, 2025, in Charleston, SC. She was 83.
Mary grew up in Great Neck, NY, with her late brother Jack Daly. Her father, John, was a high school principal, and her mother, Maddie, worked for the Visiting Nurse Association. A proud RN, Mary rose to head nurse of her floor at Long Island Jewish Hospital in the 1970s. Her nursing career ended at the age of 34 when she was struck by a drunk driver on her way home from work. The near-fatal collision left her with lasting health challenges, but she continued to care for her family while contending with its effects for the rest of her life.
In 1999, Mary moved to Charleston, where she cared for dementia patients, volunteered with Hospice and was active in her local chapter of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians.
She is survived by her daughter Amy Hill and son-in-law Gary Hill of Charleston, SC, and her grandchildren Megan, Aidan and Brigid Hill. She is also survived by her son Dennis Quinn of Manhattan, NY. She was preceded in death by her daughter Maureen Foley in 2023. She is remembered with love by her son-in-law John Foley of Glen Cove, NY, and granddaughters Kate and Madeline Foley.
A funeral Mass will be held at St. Aloysius Church in Great Neck, NY, on Monday, December 22, 2025, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Crescent Hospice, 1370 Browning Rd., Suite 120, Columbia, SC 29210.
