Hal and Charlotte, I´m so saddened to hear about Karen´s passing. I´m going to miss seeing her out and about on her golf cart and the fun lunches we had together. We feel so blessed to have met her. As a parent of two of Karen's middle school students, it was a blessing to observe how much she cared for her students. Each child, especially the difficult ones, knew they were respected, and that she would always make time to see them as individuals. Thank you, Karen, for caring for my children! We are praying for the family.

Grief brings swift reminders that a life like Karen Dowds Coste touches the very things that matter. She is one of the teachers who influenced my decision to attend Winthrop when others thought that would never happen. And she taught an English class at Ft. Johnson when I was a student. She could write backwards on the chalkboard and I thought that was so cool! I am so glad she pushed me on writing. May her family know how she blessed a lot of students!

I befriended Karen many years ago through Barbara Spell on Sullivan's Island and I found her to be a wonderfully warm, funny spitfire of a gal...always quick witted, smart and kind and always a fun joy to spend time with, whether for a few minutes or a few hours. My deep condolences to Hal and Charlotte and the grandkids and extended family. May God provide you with comfort in your grief through shared memories and her fiery spirit that you'll carry with you always, Kimberly Satriale

Miss Dowds taught me French at Fort Johnson High. Her quick humor was my style and built my interest in her class. It´s fair to say her enthusiasm was why I also majored in French at the College of Charleston. I´m sure I´m not the only one she had a profound impact on.
My deepest sympathies to her family, friends and students.
Merçi beaucoup et bonne journée. Adieu.
