May Martin Rest In Peace and my thoughts go out to the family. Martin was my boss at Baptist Hill / Schroder years ago. My memories of him remain vivid. Treating others fairly and listening with respect was his demeanor on the job. I always knew what side of the fence he stood on, which Is a trait hard to come by these days. We'll miss him!

I was very sad to hear that Martin had passed away . I was one of Martin's high school coaches during the Ft Johnson era . I was out on the football field in the off season and witnessed a young man doing front hand springs and landing on his feet . I was amazed at the athleticism , especially in a 200 pound body . I went out of my way to approach him and was shocked to find out he was only 14 years old ! That was the first time I met Martin . I convinced him to wrestle and the seeds for a lifelong friendship were planted . When he was in the 9th grade Ft Johnson had Buster Matthews as a returning senior heavyweight which kept Martin out of the starting line-up . We traveled up in to North Carolina to wrestle and they had an extra weight class , 220 . I was able to enter Buster at 220 and Martin at heavyweight . If I remember correctly , they both placed first as did several of their team mates . It was a very memorable and proud moment for me as a young coach . I moved away , back home to Virginia , but continued to stay in touch with Martin and I know of his successes in his remaining high school years as well as his time at Chowan and then his incredible career at University of Tennessee . He continued to reach out during the years he served as a coach at James Island . I always told him how proud I was to have been his coach . This is a very sad day for me and I hope that his family can find some comfort in knowing what an important person he was in my own life . I am confident that I am a better person for having known Martin. I would love to one day meet his family members and thank them in person for my relationship with Martin !

My sincere condolences to Martin´s family. I had the privilege to go to high school with Martin and have so many countless memories of him. Martin was one of the best athletes I´ve ever seen in my life and I was always so thankful to be his teammate rather than his opponent. I´ll always remember the road trips to games and camps which featured Martin singing his favorite Tina Turner song or us dancing to Chaka Kahn. Martin was a intimidating athlete but had a big heart and soft side. As an adult, I´ll never forget Martin getting done on one knee with a big smile to meet my step son for the first time. I will miss you but I´ll never forget our memories my friend. Rest In Peace
