Martha Schroeder Obituary

Martha Virginia "Ginny" Stenberg Schroeder Charleston - Recently during a bout with poor health, Ginny Schroeder spoke of her eventual demise as a time of joyous reunion. She was looking forward to being with her beloved, late husband Larry; they would be together again in the full presence of the Lord they served all their days. Ginny was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and graduated from Euclid Central High School in 1947. She then attended Kent State long enough to find that she preferred the business world to academia. Ginny enjoyed office work. She relished the camaraderie, along with opportunities to be helpful and supportive to co-workers. She was known for her sense of humor and for her formidable organizational skills. She worked for General Motors and held positions in accounting and as a PBX operator. Both Schroeders were with GM; and as Larry made corporate moves, Ginny worked in the offices of the Chevrolet Division in Atlanta and GMAC in Baltimore. A favorite era of her career was the 26 years she then spent in Lake Wylie, SC, where she was office manager of First Property of the Carolinas (aka River Hills Plantation.) The Schroeders were among the first residents of the Bishop Gadsden Retirement Community in Charleston, SC. They were very active retirees. Ginny had taken piano and saxophone lessons as a youngster, and she now had time for her own music as well as enjoying performances of the Metropolitan Opera and symphonies throughout the Southeast. She was an avid golfer and a devoted pro football fan (think: "the Browns!") She usually had a crochet project at hand. However, most of Ginny's leisure time was spent in volunteering, in helping others. It was in 1989 that the couple began volunteering with the Kairos Ministry, and for 26 years Ginny served in executive capacities in addition to "never missing the chance to go to prison with friends." She was an Episcopalian and served on altar guilds in every parish the Schroeders made their church home. She was a Lay Eucharistic Minister and a devoted Daughter of the King. Ginny is survived by an extensive family-of-the-heart which includes friends, prayer partners, co-workers, neighbors and the staff at Bishop Gadsden. Plans for a memorial service will be announced at a later date. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Downtown Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Bishop Gadsden Charitable Fund, 1 Bishop Gadsden Way, Charleston, SC 29412, or to Kairos of South Carolina, PO Box 22421, Hilton Head, SC 29925.
