Martha Daniels Obituary

DANIELS, Martha CAMDEN - Martha Williams Daniels of Camden, South Carolina, died March 28, 2009 at her home. She was born in Ft. Smith Arkansas on February 27, 1923, the daughter of the late David Rogerson Williams IV and Martha Hill Williams. Her husband of 63 years, John Hancock Daniels died September 18, 2006. Martha spent her childhood at Mulberry, near Camden returning with her husband and extended family after World War II. She and her husband resided in Minnesota while he pursued a career with Archer Daniels Midland Company. Martha and Jack remained active at Mulberry engaged with their children and extended family until his retirement 1973 at which time they made Camden their permanent home. Throughout the years Martha and Jack remained vitally interested in Camden, its people and institutions. At the same time she and Jack were adventurous world travelers. Martha was an active sportswoman, a graceful rider and a sure shot. She loved her garden. Above all, she maintained a lifelong love for her immediate and extended family, and a passion and scholarly talent for its written legacy. Her abiding interest was her husband, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, her siblings and their families - all of whom make Mulberry their second home. Martha is survived by her children, Martha Mitchell Daniels of Camden, SC; John Hancock Daniels Jr. and daughter-in-law Lisa Milne Daniels of Minneapolis, MN; Jane Daniels Moffett of Manhattan, NY; Christopher Williams Daniels and daughter-in-law Kelly Jean Bates of Denver, CO. She is also survived by her loving grandchildren, Martha Shull Archer and grandson-in-law Gregory Allen Archer of Minneapolis, MN; Willard Charles Shull IV and granddaughter-in-law Krysia Syska Shull of Marblehead, MA; Cedar Starr Daniels and granddaughter in-law Fanny Daniels of Brooklyn, NY; John H.B. Daniels of Memphis, TN; Kate Serena Moffett of Pittsburg, PA; Peter Bell Daniels of Quito, Ecuador; Charles Locke Moffett of Manhattan, NY; Caroline Serena Daniels of Minneapolis, MN; and great grandchildren Martha Serena Archer and Jack Robbins Archer of Minneapolis, MN; Willard Charles Shull V and Sydney Jean Shull of Marblehead MA; and Ila Starr Daniels of Brooklyn, NY. She is also survived by her sister Kate Williams Tabor of Washington D.C and brother Joseph Hill Williams and sister-in-law Terese Treman Williams of Spring Island SC. She will be remembered and always loved by her family as our mentor and moral compass. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Camden Archives, 1314 Broad Street, Camden SC 29020. A private family service will be held. Family friends will be welcomed at Mulberry for a reception from 5pm to 7pm on Tuesday, March 31, 2009.
