Marjorie Whitt Obituary

Marjorie Turner Whitt COTTAGEVILLE, SC - Widow of Lionel F. Whitt, Sr., was born in Princeton, West Virginia, a daughter of Charles William and Josephine Raye Bonham Turner. She was born December 10, 1919 and was 94 years old. She attended schools in Princeton, was a member of the National Honor Society, as well as a recipient of awards in district and state poetry reading and spelling competitions. She graduated with honors from West Virginia Business College. Margie retired from federal civil service after 22 years, working at the former Army Depot and then for Defense Property Disposal, both in Charleston, SC. She was later employed for 7 years as the administrative assistant to the director of the Trident Health District of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, and was an active member of the DHEC retiree luncheon group. Margie served as past president of the Wando Woods Garden Club, was a member of the Wando Woods Civic Club, NARFE, and proud member of Chapter 187 of the National Camping Travelers, a Masonic camping club. Margie and Lionel were founding members of Cokesbury United Methodist Church in Charleston Heights. She taught kindergarten class, belonged to the Bible study group, and loved singing in the church choir. She had a beautifully clear high soprano voice! Upon moving to Cottageville to live with her daughter, she joined the Cottageville United Methodist Church and attended regularly until moving to Colleton Courtyard. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Sue Whitt, LCDR, US Coast Guard Reserve, (Ret) of Cottageville, SC; and two sons, Lionel F. "Chuck" Whitt, Jr. (Carol) and Michael David Whitt, daughter-in-law Suzy Metcalf Whitt and grandchildren, Caitlin Nicole Whitt and Mitchell David Whitt, all of Mars Hill, NC. Our heartfelt thanks go out to the staff of Colleton Courtyard and Colleton Medical Center, as well as Odyssey Hospice, who took such excellent care of her in her final months and days. We send a very special thank-you to her long time caregiver, Thelma Stephens, of Walterboro, who loved her dearly and treated her like her own mother. A graveside service will be held at Live Oak Memorial Gardens on Highway 61, Charleston, SC on Friday, July 25, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Ave., 7th fl., New York, NY 10001 or Cottageville United Methodist Church, 10685 Cottageville Highway, Cottageville, SC 29435.
