Marion Elkin Obituary
ELKIN, Marion Mrs. Marion Price Elkin, age 98, of Sandersville, Georgia passed away on September 9, 2008, in Washington County, Georgia. Surviving are one sister, Iris Price Dover, of Foley, AL; three nephews, Kenneth and Dorothy Price of Charleston, SC, John and Dana Price of Mount Pleasant, SC, and Jimmy and Mary Dover of Orange Beach, AL; one niece, Karen and Aaron Cohen of Newton Center, MA; three great-nephews, Ted and Cheryl Price of Shelby, NC and Trey and Calvin Price of Mount Pleasant, SC. Mrs. Elkin was a graduate of the University of Georgia, Class of 1938. She worked as a Home Demonstration Agent in Columbia and Toombs Counties, Georgia until 1945. She married Benjamin Elkin of Wallace, North Carolina, who was in the pickling manufacturing business. She taught home economics in the North Carolina public schools until her retirement in 1975, earning many accolades and a reputation as a distinguished and accomplished educator. In 2000, she returned to Georgia to be near her home place in Pringle and lived at Tennille Retirement Home. She recently moved to Heritage Inn in Sandersville, Georgia. She was a member of University of Georgia Presidents Club, Duplin County (North Carolina) Retired Teachers Association, First Baptist Church (Wallace), Duplin County Association of University Women (charter member), Washington County Georgia Historical Society (life member), National Register of Prominent Americans 1972-1973, 4-H Girls Club of Georgia, and Pleasant Hill Baptist Church (Pringle, Georgia). She was the 1928 National Champion of the 4-H Girls Club for which she received a full scholarship to the University of Georgia for one year. She endowed several scholarships, one at the University of Georgia which is awarded each year to a deserving student from Columbia, Johnson, or Washington County. Included among the others is one at James Sprunt Community College in Kenansville, North Carolina, and another at Trident Technical College in Charleston, SC in memory of her brother, John Hugh Price. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents, Arthur and Nancy Price; two brothers, Tarver Bridges Price and John Hugh Price; two sisters, Marchita Price and Virginia Price Turner and a brother-in-law, James Dover. In Lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions, in memory of Ms. Elkin, be made to the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, 5002 Bartow-Dublin Road, Wrightsville, Georgia 31096 The family will receive friends at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in the Pringle Community on Saturday, September 13, 2008 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Funeral services will follow at the church at 11:00 a.m. Reverend Scott Osborne will officiate.
