Marion Barnwell Obituary

BARNWELL, Marion EL SEGUNDO, CALIF. - Marion Pinckney Barnwell, 81, died Wednesday, December 21, 2005 at his home in El Segundo, California. He was born February 6, 1924 at The Ruins , Stateburg to the late Mr. and Mrs. St. Julien Mazyck Barnwell. Mr. Barnwell was a graduate of Edmunds High School, Class of 1942. He attended Clemson College for one semester before enlisting in the U. S. Air Force. After the war, he served in the USAF Reserves and was recalled twice. Later, he joined the Colorado Air National Guard and retired in 1966 as a Colonel. Barney joined Continental Air Lines in 1952, serving in several leadership capacities until his retirement in 1984. He was Chief Base Pilot, Director of Flight Standards and Training and was the Flight Instructor. He also was private pilot to the then President Robert Six. His love of flying never left him from the first flight at the old Sumter Airport until he reluctantly sold his own plane a few months ago. Surviving is his beloved wife, Joan, whom he met while serving in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. They married May 1, 1945 in Denver, Colorado. Also surviving are 10 children, Betty Halstead of El Segundo, California, Rosemary Tremblay of London, England, Jay Barnwell and wife Nancy of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Bob Barnwell and wife Susan of El Segundo, Mary Lu Stenson and husband Marc of Denver, Colorado, Joni Atkins and husband Bob of Oceanside, California, Paul Barnwell of Bakersfield, California, Gregg Barnwell and wife Lynn of Phillips Ranch, California, Gene Barnwell and wife Georgie of Tenopah, Nevada, and Dave Barnwell and wife Cindy of Manilla, Philippines; 16 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; his older brother, St. Julien M. Barnwell, Jr. of North Charleston; and his sister, Amelia Barnwell Harper of Sumter; 7 nieces and nephews; and a long-standing friend, Frank Wiederman, M.D. of Dallas, Texas. He was preceded in death by a son, Brian Barnwell in 1979. Rosary will be held Tuesday, December 27, at St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church, El Segundo, California with Mass to be held Wednesday, December 28, at 10 A.M. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in Los Angeles, California. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association or to Paratrin Hospice, Harbor City, California. To The Barnwell Family,

Barney was "One in a million." He always had a smile on his face and treated everyone who entered their home like family. I will always remember him sitting at his desk in the kitchen. We will all miss him dearly. My thoughts are with Joan and ALL the Barnwell's.
